Viva el Mariachi!, organizado por la Cámara Hispana
de Comercio del Condado de San Diego, prsentará a los cinco
mejores Mariachis del mundo, el próximo domingo 8 de octubre
en el Coors Amphitheater de Chula Vista.
El Festival fue creado con la finalidad de recaudar fondos para apoyar los programas de becas y ayuda a la comunidad que reliza la Cámara a lo largo y ancho del Condado de San Diego. El espectáculo contará con la participación de los siguientes Mariachis: El Mariachi Vargas de Tecatitlán, Sol de México de José Hernández, Nati Cano y Los Camperos, La Reyna de Los Angeles y el Mariachi Cobre de Randy Carrillo.

Reveal Opportunity to Focus on the
Nation's Working Poor
Washington, D.C. — Data released this week by the
U.S. Census Bureau show that the combination of a strong U.S.
economy and hard work has continued to pay dividends for America's
Latino families. For the fourth consecutive year, median income
of Hispanic households rose while poverty for Latino families
dropped. Data show that between 1998 and 1999 real median income
for Latino households increased by 6.1% from $28,956 in 1998 to
$30,735 in 1999. Meanwhile, the poverty rate for Hispanic families
declined between 1998 and 1999 from 25.6% to 22.8%.

Navy Names New Roll-On/Roll-Off Ship for U.S.

Secretary of the Navy Richard Danzig has announced that
the Navy will honor a U.S. Army soldier awarded the nation's highest
military award, the Medal of Honor, by naming the seventh in the
Bob Hope class of large, medium speed, roll-on/roll-off sealift
(LMSR) ships after the soldier.

SWC Students Offered Guaranteed Admission to UC

Chula Vista, Ca. — Southwestern College's Guaranteed
Admission for Transfer Entry (GATE) students are now insured admittance
to the University of California at Santa Cruz. Upon satisfactory
completion of the UCSD GATE requirements, Southwestern College
GATE students will have their academic performance reviewed in
advance of the regular application process. Therefore, if adjustments
are necessary, there is time to revise. UCSC is currently accepting
transfer admission agreements for the fall term now through October
15.

Eight hundred years before the Christian calendar came into
being a Nahuatl - speaking people, the "Toltecas"
became dominant in Central America. They built the city of Tollan
north of present day Mexico City, which would later become
the home of the mighty AZTECS. The Toltecs worshiped Quetzal-coatl
who was worshiped through out the previous history of Mexico.

Imagine voters telling surgeons they could not use certain
tools during an operation. Or telling music teachers that some
instruments were illegal. California voters did something similar
when they voted in 1998 by more than two to one to approve Proposition
227, which virtually eliminated bilingual education from the state's
schools. They insisted teachers no longer use one of the tools
they had for reaching students.
