FIFTEENTH ANNUAL CALIFORNIA AMERICAN INDIAN DAYS CELEBRATION



The Ram Dance, by the Guardians of the Grand Canyon, is a powerful ceremony honoring a brother animal spirit.

The Indian Human Resource Center, in conjunction with the San Diego Parks and Recreation Department, cordially invites the public to attend the Fifteenth Annual California American Indian Days Celebration (CAIDC) which will be held on Saturday and Sunday, September 19 and 20, 1998, 10 a.m. to dusk, in San Diego's beautiful Balboa Park on the corner of Park Blvd. and Presidents Way. Admission is free and it is suggested you bring your own shade and chairs.

This celebration will be marked by a variety of activities designed to highlight and honor the culture of California Indians. Here in San Diego County, there are 18 reservations comprised of four Indian nations - the Cahuilla, Cupeno, Kumeyaay, and Luiseno.

EVA MAYA ART EXHIBIT

"El Verde de Mexico," an exhibit of Mexican landscapes painted by Latina artist Eva Maya, will be shown Sept. 20 through Oct. 25, 1998 at Walter Library at United States International University. The exhibit features 40 vivid, colorful works created since 1994 by the self-taught native of Jalisco.

Her paintings have been featured in a number of collective exhibits, including shows for the Mexican Cultural Institute in Los Angeles, the Consulate General of Mexico in Salt Lake City, and at the Daytona Museum in Florida. Her most recent solo exhibit was held earlier this year at the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles.

The public is invited to an opening reception for "El Verde de Mexico: on Sunday, Sept. 20, from 3 to 5 p.m. at USIU's Walter Library. The artist will be present. Admission and parking are free, and refreshments will be served. For more information please call (619) 635-4561.

 

SUMMER FIESTA CONCERT

A free "Summer Fiesta" concert will be held on Sunday, September 27th at 6 p.m., at Pepper Park in National City.

The concert will feature the San Diego Chamber Orchestra and the Mariachi Chavez. Music highlights will include various Mexican selections and a performance by the orchestra Westwind Brass Quintet and Percussion group.

The concert is being sponsored by the San Diego Unified Port District and the City of National City. Directions to Pepper Park: From Interstate 5, take 24th street West to Tidelands Avenue and then go south directly into Pepper Park. Bring your picnic baskets and blankets for this sunset special.

 

ADAMS AVENUE STREET FAIR

Adams Avenue's historic shopping district and the community of Normal Heights play host to San Diego's 17th annual musical extravaganza known as the Adams Avenue Street Fair.

On Saturday and Sunday September 26 & 27, 1998, California's largest free music festival will be held along eight city blocks and in Adams Park showcasing 70 musical acts and 6 stages. New to this year's event is the inclusion of a theatre festival featuring performances by the critically acclaimed and Tony Award winning San Francisco Mime Troupe and San Diego's own Fern Street Circus. Fun filled activities include: full scale giant carnival rides, 400 arts and crafts vendors, exotic foods, beer gardens and a pancake breakfast. Times for the Adams Avenue Street Fair are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26 & 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27. MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART, SAN DIEGO PREMIERES DAVID REED PAINTINGS

The Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego will present David Reed Paintings: Motions Pictures at MCA in La Jolla from September 20, 1998 through January 3, 1999. Motion Pictures will feature approximately 40 paintings from throughout the artist's career, along with several of his recent multimedia installations.

The catalogue that accompanies the exhibition includes essays by exhibition curator and MCA Senior Curator Elizabeth Armstrong, art critic Dave Hickey, writer Paul Auster, and cultural Analyst Mieke Bal. The catalogue is available in both MCA bookstores for $25; $21.25 for MCA members. CRAFTERS HOME DECORATING SHOW

The traditional Julian Apple Days Home Decorating Show will be held in the Julian Town Hall on Saturday, September 19, through Sunday, September 27, 9 am to 5 pm. This annual show features local handmade crafts for your home.

These shows, Julian Apple Days, and the beautiful Fall scenery in and around Julian will make your visit a memorable one. PRESENTACION Y LECTURA

Pupa es el primer libro de cuentos de Roberto Elenes, escritor mexicano originario de Mazatlán. Su literatura es reflexión de un profundo cuestionamiento a la idea del poder absoluto. Su narrativa aborda temas y acontecimientos que han sido tabú en el campo de la sexualidad, la política, la moral, y la re-ligión dentro de la trama social.

BONITAFEST MELODRAMA

Bonita playwright Max Branscomb and his cast of 60 will take on the unpopular tollway in the musical "The Return of the Proctor Valley Monster," in the 21st Annual Bonitafest Melodrama. The show will run September 23-26 and October 2-3 at the Bonita Vista High School Theater. All shows begin at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $5 and are reserved by calling 421-9438.

Veteran performers Tim Evans, Carl Fogg, Jr., Dean Sipe and Melody Gonzalez lead a talented cast. The "Return of the Proctor Valley Monster" will open September 23 with a special Picnic On The Green party at Bonita Vista High School. CUBAN RUMBA DANCE PARTY

La Peña de Rumba hosts its monthly Cuban Rumba Dance Party, from 7 to 11 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27 at Vasa Hall, 3094 El Cajon Blvd., University Heights.

The Peña is a celebration of Cuba's rich and vibrant culture with live performances in Rumba and Conga percussion, song and dance. Also featuring demonstrations of Rueda de Casino and the latest Cuban music for you to dance to. This month's Peña will premiere a performance of the Cuban popular dance, Mambo, and feature master percussionist from Havana, Regino Jimenez. Admission is $6 students/ $8 general. "THE ELEPHANT MAN"

Winner of 8 major awards, including the Tony, Obie, Drama Desk & Outer Critics Circle Award, North Coast Repertory Theatre presents the emotionally charged play, The Elephant man. Will open September 26 and run through November 1, 1998.
Show times are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Please note: the Sunday, Sept. 27 performance is a matinee only at 2 p.m. There will also be a Saturday matinee at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31. SHIPS, MUSIC, BOOTHS HIGHLIGHT HARBOR DAYS

Tall ships and modern working vessels; live musical entertainment featuring such musical favorites as "Heroes," "Atomic Bombshell," and "Kicks"; a civil War honor detail escorting President Lincoln; arts, crafts and food booths; and more than 200 vintage automobiles will be among the highlights at Chula Vista's twelfth annual Harbor Days and Tall Ship Festival on Sept, 19 and 20.

Events begin both days at 10 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. Harbor Days is accessed by taking the J Street/Marina Parkway exit off I-5 and turning west on Marina Parkway. Additionally, a free shuttle bus will run from the H Street Trolley Station to the event both days beginning at 9:30 a.m. and will run every 30 minutes thereafter. IT AIN'T NOTHIN' BUT THE BLUES OPENS

The 23rd season of the San Diego Repertory Theater gets underway with the electrifying It Ain't Nothin' But The Blues. This musical sensation, which The Denver Post says, "lifts you up, lays you out and leaves you screaming for more" opens on Friday, September 25 at the Rep's Lyceum Stage.
