Gregoria Acosta Martinez was born on November 17, 1911 in Mexico City. She moved to the United States with her family during the Mexican Revolution.
Mrs. Martinez passed away Sept. 13 at home. She was 86.
In 1946, she and her late husband, Ralph founded La Rancharita restaurant in the Bird Rock area of La Jolla and operated it until 1982. In 1962, she and her husband additionally took over ownership and operation of La Tapatia Restaurant in Escondido from her parents who had opened its doors in 1937. She transferred ownership of La Tapatia to her son Louie in 1995, who continues to operate the family restaurant today.
Gregoria was a warm and loving mother to nine children; five daughters, Stella Escarcega, Jovita Martines, Margaret Ramirez, Beatice Cordova and Teresa Turn-bough; and four sons, Basilio (deceased), Rafael, Louie and Phillip. She is survived by 58 grandchildren, 113 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren also survive her.
She was active in St. Mary's Catholic Church and was a 30-year member of the Franciscan Third Order.
A Rosary and mass is scheduled at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
