In celebration of Fiestas Patrias, or Mexico's Independence, the 76th Los Angeles County Fair, present Fiesta del Castillo on Sunday, Sept. 13, on the Los Angeles Times Calendar Stage. The Fair will be held Sept. 10-27 at Fairples in Pomona.
Beginning at 8 p.m., America's first all-female mariachi group, Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles will perform sweet harmonic mariachi mixed with some popular cover tunes. Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles have played in concert halls, resort hotels, state fairs and at the Hollywood Bowl. They have shared the stage with Latin Performers Vikki Carr, Guadalupe Pineda and Lola Beltran.
Jose Pescador Osuna, Consul General de Mexico, will conduct the patriotic "Grito," the ceremonial cry of independence. Directly following, Fiesta del Castillo will feature a grand finale display of Mexican fireworks. The fireworks are known as "castillos" (castles) because the frame is usually a 40-foot-high framework of sticks and saplings that resembles a castle tower.
General admission tickets to Fiesta del Castillo and Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles on Sept. 13 are free with Fair admission, $12 for stageside, $10 for box seats, and $6 for reserved seats.
