American Indian Days Celebration

The San Diego American Indian community cordially invites the public to attend the Sixteenth Annual California American Indian Days Celebration (CAIDC) which will be held on Saturday and Sunday, September 18 and 19, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., in San Diego's beautiful Balboa Park on the corner of Park Blvd., and Presidents Way. Admission is free and it is suggested that you bring your own shade and chairs.


Chumash Dolphin and Swordfish Dancers

CAIDC's Sixteenth Anniversary will be marked by a variety of California Indian activities designed to highlight and honor the culture and diversity of California's indigenous people. This year's event has an exceptional program featuring California Indian dance groups, storytellers, and demonstrators from all across the state, including the Kumeyaay Bird Singers, from San Diego, CA; the Ohlone Humaya Dancers, from Chino, CA; the Chumash Swordfish Dancers, from Santa Barbara, CA; the Kupa Singers, from Pala Reservation, CA, just to name a few. There will also be over 50 arts and crafts booths featuring delicious frybread, Indian tacos, tamales, etc., plus door prizes. There will also feature authentic hand-crafted jewelry, pottery, paintings, beadwork, Kachinas.

 

Chicana/Chicano Art Exhibition

America's vibrant Chicano identities from both sides of the border will take center stage for an entire month along the San Diego Bayfront. The first annual International Chicana/Chicano Art Exhibition will take place September 17 through October 17 at the Port's B Street Cruise Ship Terminal, located on the waterfront in downtown San Diego's North Embarcadero district.

Some 2,000 works of art by more than 200 artists from throughout southwestern United States and Mexico will be featured. Works will be available for viewing and for sale, with pieces by major Latino artists such as Manuel Hernández-Trujillo, Malaquías Montoya, José Montoya, Esteban Villa, Gloria and Salvador Torres, and other artists. The exhibition will feature a wide variety of artistic styles and methods, including sculpture, drawing, oil and watercolor painting, photography, silk screening, lithography, etching, woodcutting, multimedia creations, computer graphics, murals and more. The art exhibition will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week. Admission fee is $8 for adults and $4 for children.

 

Cilantro y Perejil

The First Annual Cine Mexicano: Mexican Film Series continues with the screening of Cilantro y Perejil / Recipes to Stay Together, a light and entertaining comedy portraying conflicts of a contemporary couple. This award-winning Mexican feature film will have its San Diego premier screening beginning on Friday, September 17 at 8 p.m. at CinemaStar Theatres at 320 3rd. Ave. in Chula Vista. Showtimes will continue thru September 23rd. Prices will be $3 for students, $5 for general audiences and FREE for children (under 12). For additional information call 230-1938.

 

"The Uninvited"

Coronado Playhouse is proud to present Dorothy MacCardle's classic ghost story, "The Uninvited". Pam and Roddy are delighted when they are able to purchase a charming but abandoned house in the west of England, overlooking the Irish Sea, at a suspiciously low price from crusty Commander Brooke. The reason is quickly apparent. The ghost of the beautiful Mary Meredith, who may have been murdered there, haunts the house. "The Uninvited" opens September 23 and runs through October 31. Ticket prices are $15 Fridays/Saturdays; $12 Thursdays/Sundays; $30 Friday evening buffet and show. The Coronado Playhouse is located at 1775 Strand Way, Coronado. "Las Fiestas Patrias"

Three local young people will sing Ranchera-style songs in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month at the South Chula Vista Library, located at 389 Orange Avenue. Scheduled on September 25 at 2 p.m. in the Rosemary Lane Galeria, Daniel Valdez, Koryn Cuevas and Siani Lopez will present "Las Fiestas Patrias." The Friends of the South Chula Vista Library are sponsoring this free family program. For more information, call 585-5755.

 

"A Funny Thing Happened On the Way To The Forum"

A long running Tony Award winning New York musical comedy hit A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, is coming to the Casa del Prado Theatre opening Friday, September 24 at 8 p.m. This show features San Diego's favorite funnyman, and Guest Equity Artist, J. Sherwood Montgomery, as the head hilarity hawker in this combination of all the best gags that have been convulsing audiences for the last two thousand years. "Bandido"

From folklore to center stage, this blend of fact and fiction comes to life in Luis Valdez's Bandido! The American Melodrama of Tiburcio Vazquez, Notorious California Bandit as San Diego Repertory Theatre's season opener on Friday, September 24 and runs through October 17.

"Bandido," an admitted horse thief and train robber, was the last of the California bandits. His career as an outlaw spanned nearly 25 years until he was caught in 1874. The following year, Tiburcio Vazquez was the last man to be publicly hanged in California. Low priced previews are scheduled September 18-23. Ticket prices are $21-$34. Bonitafest `99

Bonitafest, the South County's oldest and most diverse celebration of community, is back or its 27th year on September 25. The festivities include San Diego County's best parade, a street fair featuring food and art from around the world, two road races and entertainment on two stages.

Bonitafest `99 day begins with a pancake breakfast at Sunnyside School, 5430 San Miguel Road, at 6 a.m. Followed at 9:30 a.m. by a One-Mile Run and a Kids Half-Mile. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at the corner of Bonita Road and Otay Lakes Road and down the business district until it reaches Willow Street. There will also be hundreds of vendors selling food, art, crafts and collectibles. Visitors can find anything from African soapstone art to Tony Gwynn baseball cards.

 

Children to Niños Party

Seventy Mexican children who will be given free surgeries at Mercy Hospital for a variety of congenital defects like cleft palates and club feet won't have to spend the night before their operations worrying and worrying. Instead, they will be treated to an evening of fun and international friendship as performers from three well known San Diego youth performance troupes team up to present an evening of dance, acrobatics and song at the downtown Children's Museum at the corner of Island and Front Streets.

San Diego City Councilman Juan Vargas will serve as the bilingual emcee of the event which will feature performances from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 24, by children of the San Diego Junior Theatre, Fern Street Circus, and Coast Kids Theatre. This is a tremendous community effort., it brings together doctors, lawyers, Mexicans, Americans, children, adults — all to benefit these children.
