Thomas Jefferson School of Law Professor Honored for Dedication to Hispanic Community

Thomas Jefferson School of Law Professor William R. Slomanson will receive a 1999 Hispanic Heritage Month Local Hero Award for his outstanding contribution to the Hispanic community at a reception on Thursday, September 9. The reception is being sponsored by KPBS and Union Bank of California.

Slomanson has been actively involved in the Hispanic community with his wife, Anna Valladolid-Slomanson, and members of her family, who also are being honored at the reception. He was one of the founders of the Thomas Jefferson chapter of La Raza, has helped coordinate the local Latina Mujer advocacy conference, speaks to young Latino males regarding law school careers, and has worked with Hombres Nobles, a program involving Hispanic children on East County reservations.

Recently, Slomanson offered Thomas Jefferson students a unique opportunity to learn about Mexican law and culture when he created the "Introduction to Mexican Law" course. The class was taught at Thomas Jefferson during the summer by five law professors from the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC) in Tijuana.

Slomanson is also head of Thomas Jefferson's San Diego-Tijuana Cross Border Project, designed to involve various segments of the law school community in bringing more attention to the ties that link the San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan region. As part of the project, Thomas Jefferson will host seminars and conferences throughout the coming year that will address topics including the laws of Mexico, cross-border opportunities, and issues of concern to the San Diego-Tijuana area.
