HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH AT SAN DIEGO COUNTY LIBRARIES

EL CAJON BRANCH LIBRARY

The El Cajon Branch of the San Diego County Library, 201 E. Douglas Ave., will present five September programs celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month:

Wednesday, Sept. 8^th 10:30 a.m. Pre-school storytime: Colorful stories, followed by colorful Mexican tissue paper flowers craft project.

Wednesday, Sept 15^th 10:30 a.m. Pre-School Story Time: Hispanic Heritage stories and fish stories - including "Rainbow Fish".

Wednesday, Sept 15^th 3:30 p.m. Craft program: Bookmarks and coloring sheets available at the self-service craft table.

Wednesday, Sept 22^nd 3:30 p.m. FIESTA MEXICANA: A special program in memory of former County Librarian Debra Miller Sharabi, who was project manager for the current El Cajon Library building. This local multi-aged dance troupe performs regional dances in colorful regional costumes.

Wednesday, Sept 29^th 3:30 p.m. Señor Ramon "Chunky" Sanchez, Education Coordinator of the Barrio Station, incorporates cultural songs and stories into inspiring lectures, which inform audiences about the human struggle.

Thursday, September 2, 10:30 a.m. Spanish/English Storytime with Chayo Roman.

Thursday, September 16, 10:30 a.m. Craft program: paper flowers.

Thursday, September 23, 10:30 a.m. Fiesta of Folktales with well-known storyteller Harlynne Geisler. Geisler edits the Story Bag; A National Storytelling Newsletter and wrote the award-winning book Storytelling Professionally; the Nuts and Bolts of a Working Performer.

The Jacumba Branch of the San Diego County Library, 44605 Old Highway 80, Jacumba, will present four September children's programs celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month:

Tuesday Sept.7^th at 4:00 p.m. Stories from Mexico, told by Jacumba library volunteer Cathy Feaser.

Tuesday, Sept. 14^th at 4:00 p.m. Make tissue paper flowers.

Tuesday, Sept. 21^st at 4:00 p.m. Make Chilean rain sticks. Traditionally made from tree stumps filled with rattling materials, such as dried beans, and then closed on the end, rain sticks are used in ceremonial dances to bring rain. This time paper towel holders will be decorated and take the place of tree stumps. All materials will be supplied.

Tuesday, Sept. 28^th at 4:00 p.m. Learn to make delicious, homemade Mexican hot chocolate.

Saturday, Sept. 18^th `A Taste of Mexico' 11:00 a.m. Folklorico Dancers perform at the Community Center outdoor stage (across from the library).

After the program at the Community Center meeting room, enjoy music, fun and samples of Mexican food. Bring the family. No charge.

Wednesday, Sept. 22^nd `After School Special': (ages 7-12) 4:00-5:00 p.m. Folk tales from Mexico and South America. Create an example of a Hispanic handicraft. Please register ahead of for the program.

Tuesday, Sept. 28^th and Thursday, Sept. 30^th, 3:00-5:00 p.m.. `A Colorful Celebration': Stop by the library and make a fancy bookmark or color a design to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. For all ages.

KMEX-TV Participara en Los XV Festejos Locales De La Independencia Centroamericana

Los Angeles -- KMEX-TV, se une al Comité de Festejos CentroAmericanos para celebrar el aniversario de la Independencia de los países de Centroamérica con el tradicional Festival Cultural y Gran Desfile del 4 al 5 de septiembre.

Las festividades comenzarán con el festival cultural a las 12:00 p.m., el sábado, 4 de septiembre en el Parque MacArthur. Entre los eventos programados se encuentran bailes folklóricos de los siete países celebrando su independencia, música en vivo, con Mariachis y música tropical como salsa, cumbia y merengue. Una exposición de arte incluirá pinturas, esculturas, libros y mucho más localizado en el Plaza Hotel a través del Parque MacArthur. Una de las atracciones más grandes del festival será el ambiente de la Feria con comida, artesanías, sorteos e información de los promotores y las diversas sociedades no lucarativas.

El domingo, 5 de septiembre a las 10:00 a.m., el Gran Desfile Centroamericano llenará las calles comenzando en los Bulevar Vermont y Pico en Los Angeles. El Gran Mariscal del desfile será el presentador de deportes de KMEX-TV, Jaime Motta. Acompañando a Motta en este evento estarán Nancy Agosto, Blanca Garza, Ismael Hernández Moctezuma, Guillermo y Francisco Javier Quiroz, Norma Roque y Antonio Valverde.

Las carrozas desfilarán por las calles de Los Angeles avanzando hacia el este por el Bulevar Pico, hasta llegar a la calle Alvarado, donde procederá el desfile hacia el norte. En la Calle Sexta, el desfile dará vuelta hacia el oeste hasta la calle Park View, donde terminará en la concha acústica del Parque MacArthur. Después del desfile, el público podrá disfrutar del Festival Cultural en el parque hasta las 7 de la noche.

KVEA-TV, Canal 52 Celebra el Mes de la Hispanidad en la Famosa Plaza Olvera Presentando el Evento Fiestas 16

Los Angeles, Ca — Es de nuevo esa época del año y KVEA-TV, Canal 52 está organizando la celebración más grande de la Independencia de México en el sur de California. Esta celebración se titula Fiestas 16 y se llevará a cabo del 10 al 12 de septiembre de 1999 en la Placita Olvera del centro de Los Angeles.

Durante estos tres días de fiesta, la comunidad tendrá la oportunidad de disfrutar un evento lleno de diversión con un excelente programa de entretenimiento y música en vivo, por más de noventa horas, en tres diferentes escenarios. Además, no faltará la auténtica comida Mexicana. También habrá una área de artesanías de niños y juegos mecánicos para toda la familia.

"La meta de Fiestas 16 para este año, es de aumentar los conocimientos del público sobre la cultura, arte, historia y música latina, a través de presentaciones artistícas que educan y así mismo entretienen a todos los miembros de nuestra diversa comunidad", declaró Eduardo Domínguez, gerente de KVEA-TV. "Estamos orgullosos de seguir produciendo año con año, este evento que atrae más de 100,000 visitantes durante el fin de semana", agregó.

Fiestas 16 brillará con fabulosa variedad de estrellas que se presentarán durante los tres días del evento. Entre estas se encuentran Los Tiranos del Norte, Jorge Muñiz, Angeles Ochoa, Carmen Jara, Banda Lizarraga, Gerardito Fernández, Mariachi Internacional de México, Mariachi Imperial de México, Banda Costa de Oro, Timothy Pollard y muchos más.

Todos los conciertos y actividades serán totalmente gratis.
