It is 9:30 a.m.
on September 10, and the members of the San Diego and Imperial
County Community Colleges Association (SDICCCA) have come together
at the County Office of Education for their informal, monthly
meeting. Before taking his seat at the head of the table, Dr.
Omero Suarez, Chancellor of the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College
District and President of SDICCCA, takes the time to greet each
of the Chief Executive Officers of San Diego's six community college
districts and representatives from each of its public, four-year
universities who make up the association.
He takes his seat and then proceeds to guide all present through the two-hour meeting in which SDICCCA members chide each other about football losing streaks, tackle headaches such as parking shortages and discuss solutions to more widespread problems like drastic cuts in state funding for California community colleges and the public's lack of awareness as to all that community colleges have to offer.
The efficiency and ease with which Dr. Suarez, 54, is able to run a two-college district or an issue-packed meeting such as those held by SDICCCA does little to hint at the Chancellor's humble roots. One of eleven children, he was born in Brownsville, Texas to a poor, Mexican migrant family. This son of agricultural migrants considers himself an "educational migrant" who had already surpassed his goal of becoming a high school teacher long before the time he signed on as Chancellor of the district.

UC Santa Cruz Researcher Named Hispanic Scientist
of the Year
The Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) in Tampa, Florida,
has honored Alejandro Acevedo-Gutiérrez, a research associate
at the California Academy of Sciences and the University of California,
Santa Cruz, as the National Hispanic Scientist of the Year. A
marine biologist, Acevedo-Gutiérrez studies the ecology
and behavior of dolphins and whales.
Smithsonian Latino Virtual Gallery Receives

Funds restored for planning of science, technology

EL CAJON - With the gover-nor's decision Monday to partially
restore community college dollars vetoed last July, the Grossmont-Cuyamaca

Immigrants: Old and New

An undocumented worker was struck and killed by a van on a
highway a few miles from my home in Central California while trying
to avoid being caught by immigration officers. Another died on
a highway thirty miles from my home under very similar circumstances.
Since 1998, 991 people lost their lives as they attempted to cross
into the US looking for work. Fourteen died recently in the Arizona
desert.

Water fees show who are elected officials really represent
Although we refer to it as a water bill, it really is an infrastructure
bill, one that should truly be covered by TOT funds, capitol improvement
funds, infrastructure funds and/or general funds. I was out of
town from June through Sept. 14. My water usage from 7/24 through
9/21 accounted for $6.37. My bill was $70.75. The remaining $64.38
are as follow: $19.26 for water base fee (?); $43.25 for sewer
[$17.54 of sewer base fee (?)+ $25.68 for sewer (sewer usage for
$6 worth of water?)]; and $1.90 storm drain. Aside from the $6.37,
which was used for watering the yard as opposed to using the sewer
system, everything else accounts for infrastructure fees. From
May 23 through July 24, my "water bill" was $67.40 of
which only $8.91 was for water usage and the remaining $58.41
was, again, for infrastructure fees. To be charged a waterbase
fee 3x what I use is excessive. To be charged $43.25 for sewer
services when the sewer pipes were never used is abusive.

e inquietudes y las convertía en poesia; todo esto aconteció
en su natal Villa de Fuente, en el Estado de Coahuila, comenta
Alicia hace ya muchos ayeres, pero que por discreción no

Classic Speed Festival
Chrysler-Jeep Classic Speed Festival is running at
full throttle as it prepares to land at the Naval Air Station,
North Island on picturesque Coronado in San Diego Bay for two
