CHULA VISTA Running without their strongest runner, the Southwestern College men’s cross country team came in fifth place last Saturday at the Irvine Invitational.
Led by Yafet Abraha last week’s Pacific Coast Conference male Athlete of the Week and Apolinar Mariscal, who finished 16th and 23rd respectively, the Jaguars overcame the absence of Oswaldo Alvarez who sat out the competition nursing a knee injury.
It is not known whether Alvarez will compete at this Saturday’s Southern California Prelims at Mt. San Antonio, but even without Alvarez the Jaguars seem to be in good position. Yet, head coach Duro Agbede would prefer to have Alvarez back in action as soon as possible.
The Women’s team came in fourth place, with Rose Serna finishing third individually with a time of 19:44.
Serna was followed by teammates Celene Reyes and Yvonne Li, who finished in 10th and 13th.
Abraha, a freshman from Hoover High School, helped the Jaguars to a seventh-place team finish in the Riverside Community College Invitational two weeks ago.
He ran the hilly 4.0-mile course in 21:55, the best time among all PCC entries in the meet. Abraha is tied with teammate Alvarez for the fastest conference time for 4.0 miles this season, 21:08.
