International Channel Presents Sharing Hope: Facing Breast Cancer, a Series Aimed at Increasing Awareness Among Ethnic Women

To increase awareness about breast cancer among ethnic women and to examine how cultural issues affect diagnosis and treatment of the disease, International Channel will air an original, 5-part series in October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The series will air in Spanish Monday through Friday, October 26-30, at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time. International Channel is available through select cable television operators.

"International Channel is taking a unique approach to breast cancer awareness by examining the multicultural obstacles that can affect a woman's chance for survival —such issues as the stigma of cancer, lack of knowledge about preventive medicine, language barriers and a fear of Western medicine", said Kent Rice, President and COO of International Channel. "Also, the translation of this series into various languages provides our non-English speaking viewers valuable information to which they would not otherwise have access."

Prominent breast cancer experts in the fields of medicine, research and psychology were interviewed for this series, including Dr. Helena Chang, Director of the Revlon/UCLA Breast Center and Dr. Susan Love, author, teacher, surgeon, researcher and activist. The American Cancer Society, Los Angeles County Region, also provided assistance and consultation.

Rice added, "My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer more than a year ago. Now, following chemotherapy, surgery, radiation and even homeopathic remedies she has recovered. One of my goals as executive producer of this series is for International Channel to be a resource for ethnic women as they face the same challenges my wife and I did."

The series will be hosted by Shelley Hill Grant, a model and actress who is a 14-year breast cancer survivor and beat the odds by giving birth to a child six years ago.
