MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART CELEBRATES MESTIZAJE

Both locations of the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego are open to the public free of charge the first Sunday of every month, thanks to a generous gift from Foodmaker, Inc./Jack in the Box. In addition, special programs take place each first Sunday at MCA Downtown (1001 Kettner Blvd). Museum hours on Sunday are noon to 5 p.m. ; family activities take place from 2 to 5 p.m. This program is a component of Ojos Diversos/With Different Eues,

The theme of October's Free For All First Sunday is "Culture Fusion." Celebrate Mestizaje, the blending of indigenous American with European cultures. Listen to the rhythms of 9 wind, while artists Mario Torero and Carmen Kalo conduct an art workshop based on the themes seen in the Raúl Guerrero exhibition. Guerrero will lead a walk-through of this exhibition, Problemas y Secretos Mara-villosos de Las Indias/Problems and Marvelous Secrets of the Indies, at 3 p.m.

 

FIESTA LATINA HELD AT OLD MISSION BRANCH LIBRARY

Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 to October 15 each year, and in honor of this, the Old Mission Branch of Oceanside is holding a Fiesta Latina Saturday, October 10, at 11 a.m.

Planned for this special day are bilingual stories, crafts, a video and other treats. Come prepared to have a great time until well into the afternoon. This program is free and is recommended for school age children. Please call the library at 966-4684 for additional information on this program.

 

FAMED FLAMENCO ENSEMBLE RETURNS TO CARLSBAD

The Carlsbad Arts Office will welcome back on of the outstanding successes of its visiting artists program when Yaelisa and Solera Flamenco return for a major concert performance and several community appearances October 10-13 in Carlsbad. Hailed as one of the most gifted flamenco artists of our time, multi-award winner Yaelisa has been praised as "mercurial and sensuous," "a powerful presence," and "the quintessential flamenco artist" by critics around the world.

The concert performance will take place on Saturday, October at 7 p.m. at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center, 3557 Monroe Street and is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Carlsbad Library and the Carlsbad Arts Associates. "MARIACHI AT THE MOONLIGHT"

Nydia Rojas, the award-winning Mariachi singer, will headline the evening concert portion of the two-day "Mariachi at the Moonlight" Festival at the Moonlight Amphitheatre, located at 1200 Vale Terrace Drive, on Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11. Miss Rojas will perform with Mariachi Tlaquepaque de Antonio Ramos on Saturday, October 10 at 7 p.m.

This festival will feature Mariachi Las Altenitas, an all-female group, Ballet Folklorico "Adelante" from the Rancho Buena Vista Adobe, and Ballet Folklorico Estrella. Also performing will be Mariachi Juvenil Mexicanisimo from San Diego. Tickets for the concert are $15 for reserved seating and $10 for general lawn tickets. SOUTHWESTERN COLLEGE FEATURES "THE BUS STOP"

The play "The Bus Stop" written by Che Zhan in 1981 will be featured at Southwestern College Mayan Hall on Wednesday, October 14, 1998 starting at 9 p.m. "The Bus Stop" technically and stylistically combines several elements into an integral whole. This piece is held together by its use of music and rhythm. "The Bus Stop" a must see play, will benefit PACTO Latino AIDS Organization. The donation is $10. Southwestern College is located at 900 Otay Lakes Road in Chula Vista. For more information call 565-3901. Tickets may be purchased at the door.

 

2ND ANNUAL MICHELOB AMBERBOCK OKTOBERFEST

This October the Gaslamp will host the 2nd Annual Michelob AmberBock Okto-berfest in San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter on Sunday, October 11, from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m. Twenty bands will be on three stages with live local and national bands on F Street, Island Street and 5th Avenue.

This event will feature Hof Brau specials (that's beer specials for you non-German drinkers throughout the district), Uhmpa bands, Mr. & Ms. Oktoberfest, great music, great food and great beer. This event cannot be missed. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door and includes free cover and front of the line privileges to more than 15 of the Gaslamp's hottest restaurants and nightclubs. SCREAM ZONE FEATURES HOLLYWOOD-DESIGNED HAUNTED HOUSE

The Scream Zone at the Del Mar SCAREgrounds, north San Diego County's creepiest Haunted House and thrill ride Midway, also features Halloween-themed foods and vendor booths. This event opens Thursday, October 8 and continues until October 31 at the Del Mar SCAREgrounds, located at I-5 and Via de la Valle, Del Mar.

The Haunted House, featuring over a dozen spooky chambers, is a custom-designed attraction packed with special effects props created by movie and television horror effects specialists. Scream Zone will also feature a Midway area of thrill rides and games, along with the Market of the Macabre, a themed food concession and vendor booth area. Haunted House admission is $8.50. MIRACOSTA'S 1998-99 THEATRE SEASON

Comedy, romance, drama, one-act plays, and dance performances are all part of MiraCosta College's 1989-99 theatre season, opening Oct., 8 with "The King and I" at the MiraCosta College Theatre, One Barnard Drive, Ocean-side. "The King and I" which was the first musical Larry Jorgensen ever directed — back in 1960 at Norfolk High School in Nebraska. Show dates are Oct. 8-10 and Oct. 15-17, 7:30 p.m.; and Octo. 11 and 18 at 2 p.m. Individual admission $10; Students, seniors and children, $7.

"Inspecting Carol" is a tale of a man who goes to audition at a small community theatre — and is mistaken for a government informant for the National Endowment for the Arts. Everyone caters to him completely, creating one hilarious situation after another. Show dates are Nov. 12-14 and Nov. 19-21 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 15 and 22 at 2 p.m. Individual admission is $7; Students, seniors and children, $5.

"Escape from Happiness" revolves around a dysfunctional family whose chemistry makes them believable, sympathetic, and very human. It's a story about the true nature of love. Show dates are March 11-13 and March 18-20 at 7:30 p.m.; March 14 and 21 at 2 p.m.; Individual admission $7; Students and seniors $5.

"The Heidi Chronicles" follows the coming of age of Heidi Holland as she watches her colleagues move from the idealism of their college years through feminism and into materialism. SWING! SWING! SWING!

The Swing! Swing! Swing! show is an homage to the days when Benny Goodman was crowned the King of Swing. The tone is set with The Big Band Alumni Orchestra playing Benny's theme song, "Let's Dance," and the Sunnysiders singing "It don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing." As the band kicks into gear, a group of young dancers, The Jitterbuggers, will show the audience what "swing" is all about.

The show also features lead singers Herb Jeffries and Jaye P. Morgan. Tickets for the show may be charged by phone by calling 440-2277. Tickets are also available in person at the ECPAC Box Office, 210 East Main Street in El Cajon.
