San Diego-Tijuana Binational Economic Summit

Setting the Stage For The Region de Oro

The ninth annual Binational Economic Summit, organized by the South San Diego County Economic Development Council (SCEDC), the Tijuana Economic Development Council (CDT), the Urban Land Institute (ULI), and the Small Business Development & International Trade Center (SBDITC), will be held October 28-29. This year's summit combines the ULI's 2000 Economic Forecast.

"Setting the Stage for the Region de Oro" is the theme of this year's summit, which will open on October 28 with an evening workshop and reception at the Holiday Inn Spa in Tijuana. The workshop, hosted by the CDT, is from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Designed to offer first-hand perceptions from foreign companies doing business in the San Diego/Tijuana region, the workshop will include a panel discussion, "Foreigners' Perspective of the Region de Oro." Panel participants are M. In Chong Son, Vice President of Hyundai de México (Korean company); Mr. Masafumi Matsu-naga, President of Sanyo de México (Japanese company); Mr. John Coibon, Vice President/General Manager of SAFT (French company); and Mr. Robert Webber, President of Asembleas de México (U.S. company). Local, state and federal officials from both sides of the border will also be present. Attendance is limited to the first one hundred registered guests and bus transportation from San Diego will be provided.

On October 29, the summit will be held at the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina, from 7:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sessions will include the ULI's Sandy Goodkin, who will moderate a discussion of perspectives of the U.S. and Mexican economy and a financial market analysis. Charles Nathanson, Executive Director of San Diego Dialogue, will moderate a session titled: "Technology in the Region de Oro—R&D to Manufacturing. Noted panelists include Enrique Mier y Teran, arguably the father of Tijuana's maquiladora industry; Harvey White of Leap Wireless; Tony Ramirez of Made in Mexico and Abi Barrow of UCSD Connect.

Mike Stepner, Dean of the New School of Architecture, will moderate a session titled: "Land Use Dynamics in the San Diego/Tijuana Region." The session will address the two regions' industrial land usage, housing needs, growth patterns and environmental perspectives. The summit will close with a luncheon, featuring speakers Jesus F. Reyes Heroles, Ambassador of Mexico to Washington, D.C. and Deborah Szekely, Founder and Chairman of the Board of the Eureka Communities Foundation; and the presentation of an award to Sempra Energy for its contribution to the binational region.
