"Día de los Muertos"
Old Town San Diego's Bazaar del
Mundo will put an international twist on the Halloween season
when it presents the authentic trappings of the Mexican folk holiday
"Día de los Muertos" (Days of the Dead),
Friday, Oct. 29 through Monday, Nov. 2. Candles, marigolds, decorated
altars, traditional gifts and the fascinating art integral to
the important Mexican holiday will be featured and explained in
interpretive displays throughout the Bazaar del Mundo's restaurants
and stores, detailing the significance of the observance.
There will also be a display of hand-made paper cutouts, wood, terra cotta and papier-maché pieces that have been used in Mexican celebrations for generations. Renowned tin artist Arturo Sosa Perez will travel from Oaxaca to craft skeleton ornaments, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 30-31. Ghosts & Gravestones
The Port of San Diego announces that Old Town Trolley of San Diego, in conjunction with the San Diego Historical Society, will now offer a new tour, "Ghosts & Gravestones". The 90-minute tour takes guests on a trolley ride through historic San Diego with special tales, including "Yankee Jim Robinson," whose spirit still roams the halls of theWhaley House in Old Town State park, one of only two haunted houses officially recognized by the U.S., government.
Winding its way through Downtown and the Gaslamp Quarter, guests will learn about all the ghostly "hot sports" around town. The tour also passes by the Museum of Death, home of the city's first morgue. Learn the tale of Kate Morgan, the young woman who checked in at the Hotel Coronado... but never checked out! Reservations are required by calling 298-8687. Admission is $32 per person of all ages. For a limited time - October 21 - 31, the ticket price will include a tour of the Haunted Star of India's "Tales from the Ship."
Julio Iglesias
Following last year's popular engagement, Julio Iglesias, Grammy Award winner and the biggest-selling recording artist in history, returns to Segerstrom Hall at the Orange County Performing Arts Center October 22-24. Julio will perform songs from his most recent album My Life: The Greatest Hits, as well songs from his album Tango on Friday, and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. Ticket prices range from $25 to $75, and they may be purchased by phone through TicketMaster at (714) 740-7878.
Día de las Brujas

Annual Collector's Auction
A stunning assortment of ethnic arts and crafts from vivid Mexican and Guatemalan textiles to a delicate Japanese lacquer vase will be up for bid during the San Diego Museum of Man's fifth annual Collector's Club Auction 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 23.
Ron Munn, a renowned auctioneer of Native American and Western American art and collectibles, will lead the lively bidding on an exotic array of items from around the world, including American Samoa, China, Pakistan, Bhutan, Bali, Morocco, Costa Rica, Mexico, Ecuador, Nigeria and Indonesia. Among the pieces slated to be on the auction are tapa cloths from the South Seas, Casas Grandes pottery, Southwest jewelry, Yaqui masks, a Balinese wood carving, Mexican alebrijes, an Ecuadorian model wooden cart and an Eskimo-carved bone mask. 1999 Chrysler/Jeep Classic Speed Festival
As one of the finest collections of vintage race and sports cars descends upon Coronado Island for the third annual Chrysler/Jeep Classic Speed Festival, car enthusiasts will be taken on a nostalgic journey through racing's storied history. Visitors will be treated to more than 200 rare and powerful cars as they challenge a 1.6 mile road course during a fun and exciting weekend. The races will be Saturday, Oct., 23 and Sunday, Oct., 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Naval Air Station North Island, in Coronado. Enter through NASNI main gate and mention you're there for the races.
Annual Fall Plant Sale
The largest and most diverse plant sale in San Diego County will be held at Quail Botanical Gardens on October 23 and October 24 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The sale will feature large quantities of drought-tolerant plants, California natives, cacti, succulents, and manu unusual plants. In addition, varieties of subtropical plants, bamboo and dried plant material will also be available. There will also be booths with gardening-related items, books, tools, crafts for sale as well as demonstrations. Refreshments will be available. Monster Mash
Masquerade in your best Halloween costume, grab your favorite swing-dancing partner, and have a howling good time at the Free Halloween "Monster Mash' Costume ball. "Freddy A and the Swing Machine" will provide the music for the festivities on October 29, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel, located at 8110 Aero Drive in Kearny Mesa. The event will include a costume contest. Winners will be selected based upon three categories, "Most Monsterous," "Most Elegant" and "Funniest." Blast Into the 21st Century
This free family oriented Carnival will be held Saturday, October 23rd from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, October 24th from 12 noon to 6 p.m. The event will be at Blessed Sacrament Parish School on El Cajon Blvd. and 56th Street. There will be more than fifty craft booths, a beer garden a $5 Happy Hour on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. There will also be an entertainment stage, rides for the kids, great food and karoke. Soprano Sylvia McNair
The internationally renowned soprano Sylvia McNair will make her San Diego debut on October 24, with a recital at Sherwood Auditorium. A specialist in early music, the American soprano will present an intimate evening of songs by Handel, Purcell, Dowland, Argento and Debussy, as well as a set of Spanish songs by Rodrigo. She is widely considered one of the most elegant artists on the stage today. Tickets are no longer available, but a waiting list has been established for returned tickets ($40). Vienna Choir Boys
The Vienna Choir Boys, revered for their music making over the past 500 years, bring their heavenly harmony to the California Center for the Arts, Escondido for one concert only on Wed., Oct. 27 at 8 p.m. They will perform a program of Baroque and 20th century composers, folk songs and conclude with polkas and waltzes by Johann Strauss II. "Master Class"
One of the most praised and successful Broadway plays of the last decade, "Master Class," comes to the California Center for the Arts, Escondido for one performance only on Friday, October 29 at 9 p.m. Master Class vividly brings to life an internationally celebrated and revered woman, opera diva Maria Callas. Based on an actual event, the piece takes place during a master class she conducts with three young singers in front of a live audience. She is tough and acerbic in her comments on these three as well as her past rivals. It is the winner of three Tony Awards in 1996 including Best Play. African American Museum
The African American Museum of Fine Arts proudly presents the first speaker in their 1999-2000 Artist Lecture Series. Please join us for "Conversations with Jac-quelyn Hughes Mooney" on Sunday, October 24, at 2:30 - 4:30 PM at the Gallery 504 located at 504 13th Street in Downtown San Diego. Jacquelyn Hughes Mooney is a renown quilt maker and is currently serving as the national representative for Johnson & Johnson Baby Products in their 1999 "When I Think of You" Cuddle Quilt Promotion. "Tales from the Ship"
The San Diego Maritime Museum will stage a unique tour of Star of India this Halloween called, "Tales from the Ship." People of all ages are invited to a 20-minute walk-through of the ship to meet the "ghosts" of Star of India's past. Star will offer tours nightly, from October 21-31, from 6-10 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults, and $4 for children. A special "Twilight Tour" will invite tiny children on board Star of India for an exciting, but toned down version of the tour nightly from 6-7 p.m. For more information, or to purchase tickets call 234-9153.
