Latinos Invited to Enter International Web Design Contest!

I am very interested in having high schools kids from the Latino community in your area compete in the second international web design contest.

Thanks so much for getting this information to your talented high schoolers. Yo soy Hispano, por lo tanto tengo un interés especial en estudiantes Latinos para este concurso! I think it's a new way to engage students in public affairs.

The Web Contest: High School Student Web Design Contest with $50,000 in prizes. We are looking for students from all over the world who are creative and interested in entering a national competition with great prizes! The deadline for submission is February 1, 2000.

The winner gets a $20,000 scholarship to Iowa State University, one of the top 100 "Wired" universities in the world and the place where the first electronic digital computer, the Atanasoff-Berry Computer was invented in 1937. Other prizes include two $10,000 scholarships, several medal winners, teacher/mentor recognition awards, and some very cool software! Winners can major in any of the over 300 areas of study offered at Iowa State.

Please look at on of the following web sites for information about the contest.

Good Samaritan

Applauded

I applaud the anonymous donor who forwarded $12,000 toward the hospital bill of that gardener Mr. Jose Batalla, the Good Samaritan passerby, who stopped to combat someone else's garage fire. Fortunately, this hero suffered no serious injury other than smoke inhalation….

Lost in the recounting of who paid up how much to whom, etc. is a missing central point of just how, in the first place, the hospital could in good conscience charge Batalla over $16,000 (exclusive of the $3,000 doctor bill) for that overnight stay. Something is terribly wrong here.

(Comment: You hit on a tender spot here. SOME doctors have a bank vault in place of a heart. SOME doctors are responsible for pushing the medical profession into the position of replacing lawyers as the butt of hate jokes.)

Death of Ron McElliott Touches Teenager

Mr. Ron McElliott, founder of race, died after finishing the 10K run, this past Sunday, October 17, at the Arturo Barrios Invitational. I was one of the first to notice that he was in trouble… when he fell to the ground gasping for air.

This experience affected me because my Dad and Brother Tony had run the 5K race that same morning. That could have happened to them. But, it didn't. It changed how I now look at life. I now see life as a privilege that can be taken from you at any time.

That is why I am now going to accomplish major things in my life. So, when that privilege is taken from me, people will remember me as one who had great potential or one who had a great personality when it comes to taking the initiative in a business or company of some sort. Or maybe, even be a dare-devil and ski-dive for some kind of world record. The way I see life is: One day you are perfectly healthy and running a 10k and the next thing you know, you may be dying and looking down on yourself and wishing you could do one more thing before you die. But, you can't... and that's hard.

Why Isn't La Prensa on KPBS?

Why do you not participate on the weekly KPBS Gloria Penner morning program "Editors Roundtable"? I am convinced that your "voice" is sorely needed in this "one-newspaper" town... I look forward to your reply.

(Comment: Thanks for the compliments. This is a question that should be asked of the management of KPBS. Needless to say Gloria Penner never asked Mr. Muñoz to appear.)

Aficionado del Toreo Pleased with Coverage

The bullfight season in Tijuana has ended and I wish to thank Lyn Sherwood and La Prensa San Diego for his "Bullfight World" columns and photos. La Prensa is probably the only newspaper in the world that carries regular weekly bullfight reviews in English. But whatever the language, Lyn Sherwood's columns are the best. They are like seeing a good bullfight a second time.

Muchas Gracias

(Keep your fingers crossed, Lyn is being wooed by Spanish interests. If we lose him, we will probably have to close down our coverage. There is no one that covers "La Fiesta Brava" like Lyn. Not only does he capture the essence of "La Corrida" but he is also an "Aficionado Practico" and dares to challenge the 400 kilo bulls in the bullring.)
