New Public Health Officer Named for County of San Diego

George R. Flores Begins Work Dec. 1

Dr. George R. Flores, public health officer and director of the public health division of the Sonoma County Department of Health Services, has been named the new public health officer for San Diego County's Health and Human Services Agency.

He begins work here Dec. 1.

Flores currently supervises 200 employees and a $20 million annual budget. Programs he oversees for Sonoma County's Department of Health Services include communicable disease control, emergency medical services, public health lab, and maternal, child and adolescent health services.

"We conducted a national search, and found a health professional who will add immensely to the services offered by the county," said Robert K. Ross, M.D., director of San Diego County's Health and Human Services Agency. "George's credentials and experience are outstanding, and he has been a leading expert on the health status of Latinos and other ethnic minorities. We feel lucky to have him on board."

Flores earned his medical degree at the University of Utah College of Medicine in Salt Lake City, and he holds a master's degree in public health from the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

In the newly created position, Flores will oversee disease surveillance, epidemiology, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, emergency medical services, and other public health programs.
