California Latino school board members, together with the California Latino Superintendents Association, will be convening their 14th annual conference October 1 & 2, 1999, at the San Diego/Del Mar Hilton Hotel, with a theme entitled, "Today's Learner's, Tomorrow's Leaders."
Among the topics of discussion are "English Language LearnersRole of a Trustee," "Standardized Testing & Reporting (STAR)Qué Pasó? Qué Significa?" "The Bilingual Child--High Tech Successes," "Promoting Latino Literacy," "Engaging Latino Parents in YOUR District," "Latinos and the MediaWhose Message is it Anyway? and "School Boards and the Voting Rights Act." The conference will also feature successes in education for Latinos.
Among the keynote speakers will be Senator Richard Polanco, Senate Majority Leader and founding member of the Latino Legislative Caucus; Leslie DeMersseman, President of the influential California School Boards Association and trustee from Palm Springs; two Latino Presidents of California State Universities; the highest ranking Latina in the Secretary of Education Office, as well as local Latino students who will deliver words of wisdom from a real-life student perspective.
Present at the 1:00 pm press conference will be Senator Richard Polanco, Leslie DeMersseman, Esau Ruiz Herrera (President of CLSBMA), and Lillian Tafoya, conference chairperson (and former state AND national "Principal of the Year"), together will Ernestine Jones (President, Coalition of Black School Board Members) and Abe Bautista (President, Asian Pacific Islanders School Board Members Association.)
