Join the Barrio Logan College Institute's (BLCI) efforts to help Barrio Logan children get on the fast-track to college. We are actively recruiting for prospective mentors for our Mentor Program that will be expanding to serve 100 children in the upcoming 99/2000 academic year.
You must be a college graduate, be able to make a one year commitment to your assigned student and actively participate in several group activities throughout the course of the year. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals interested in being part of the future success of a young student
The institute is dedicated to the academic advancement of Barrio Logan children, led by a board of parents, community leaders, elementary school officials, local business leaders and university faculty and administrators, who are working together to effect positive change in the education of the youth.
In an effort to reach our goal of increasing the numbers of college bound students from the Barrio Logan area, we operate two comprehensive academic and community support components: Elementary School Component (ESC) and the Middle School Component (MSC). The ESC includes three programs (After-School Enrichment, Parent and Mentor programs). The newly formed MSC is composed 28 6th-8th grade students who are currently attending schools such as Memorial Academy, La Jolla Country Day School, UCSD Preuss School, etc. These students have graduated from BLCI's three year ESC. They receive additional academic and personal support. In the near future, a High School Component will follow.
The Institute's Mentor Program matches up each of our students with a professional in the area, who is interested in providing that student with additional support and encouragement. Mentors serve as role-models and friends to our students. Mentors meet with their mentee once a month and maintain regular phone contact over the course of the month to check in on their progress in school. Many fieldtrips will give the opportunity for mentors and students to spend half a day or a full day together. Ideally, the mentors-student relationships will continue well beyond our students graduation from the Elementary School Component.
