Homeys Youth Foundation will honor three individuals who have made a huge difference in the lives of residents of Southeastern San Diego and Logan Heights as part of its Annual Meeting on September 30, 1999. Clinton Pearson, founder and Executive Director of Homeys, announced that Parnell Lovelace and Steve Wilson will be named "Homeboys of the Year" and Nancy Smith will be named "Homegirl of the Year" for their contributions to the success of Homeys' programs and for their other substantial work in the community.
"Parnell Lovelace was instrumental in the formation of Homeys in 1993 and has assisted me in countless ways in the six subsequent years," said Pearson. Mr. Lovelace is currently a member of the Board of Directors and is the organization's parliamentarian. He works as a business consultant and devotes much of his time as a community activist, serving in leadership roles in many voluntary efforts including the Friends of Allensworth.
"With his boundless energy and enthusiasm, Steve Wilson has been a tremendous positive force for the organization," Pearson noted, adding, "He has been an active Vice President of the Board as well as a volunteer leader of the Youth Leadership Team." Mr. Wilson, owner of Samsons 501 Restaurant downtown, also serves on the Market Creek Plaza Planning Committee, aids St. Vincent de Paul in feeding the homeless.
"We were lucky to find Nancy at a time when Homeys was seeking to expand our programming and the number of families we could reach. Her expertise in fundraising and non-profit development has us well on the way to where we want to go," said Pearson. Ms. Smith, consultant and owner of TeamSmith, works with many non-profit organizations in Southeast San Diego, helping them to achieve their goals. She works closely with the Jacobs Family Foundation and its partner agencies.
Homeys is a community-based non-profit organization that seeks to provide members of the communities of Logan Heights and Southeastern San Diego with the tools and training that will enable them to realize their full potential as individuals, as family members, and as citizens. It runs the Home Instruction Program for Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY), a program that helps parents to prepare their young children for a successful start in school; the Even Start Family Literacy Program, which provides educational services to help adults become more effective as parents and in life; and the House of Potential, which currently houses the Youth Leadership Team, an outstanding group of young leaders learning and working together to benefit their neighborhood.
