Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is embarking on an exciting monthly living history program in 2002. State Parks is committed to educating Californians about San Diego's rich California Indian, Californio, or early-Mexican; and U.S. heritage. The historic park needs all types of people to help reenact these important events in San Diego's early history and/or financially support this effort. Living History involves making history come alive with people dressed in historical period clothing by demonstrating or reenacting historic events, trades, or crafts.
Special reenactments will take place primarily on the Fourth Saturday of every month except in May and November where they will be on the Third Saturday due to holidays. Living History, on a more intimate scale, also takes place several times weekly but especially on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is also looking for volunteers who love history and dressing in historical period clothing to bring San Diego's history to life with scenarios that depict actual historic events. The themes include events from San Diego's Mexican Period to the early U.S. period. The State Park needs volunteers of different ethnic backgrounds to convey the diverse people that helped build San Diego into the cosmopolitan city it is today.
There will be auditions for all the primary historic characters. The park is looking for professional and amateur actors to fill these roles. All the main characters will have their photograph posted in the Visitor Center, free video of the performance, as well as billing in the souvenir program. Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is one of the most visited places in California so actors will get great exposure during these reenactments.
People of all talents and abilities are encouraged to volunteer including high school students with community service requirements and college students that would like internships or independent study credit. Active military are also invited to volunteer for the several Mexican-American War related activities. Whole families are welcome to volunteer as well. Training for volunteers will be on six Sunday afternoons from 2-6 p.m. starting January 13th, 2002, skipping Super Bowl Sunday.
