Minneapolis, MN Dr. Rudy M. Castruita, San Diego County Superintendent of Schools, has been elected to the National Governing Board of Trustees for the nation's largest private sector scholarship foundation, Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America (CSFA).
Dr. Castruita was elected to a three-year term after previously serving as a member of CSFA's National Advisory Board of Trustees. On the governing board, he joins a nationally-prominent 24-member team composed of corporate, educational, civic, and foundation leaders who oversee general governance for the foundation. Announcement of his election was made by Dr. William C. Nelsen, CSFA President.
As the nation's largest private sector scholarship and educational support organization, CSFA distributed nearly $82 million in assistance to some 86,000 students in FY98 through its three main programs, Dollars for Scholars, Scholarship Management Services and ScholarShop. Through those three programs, CSFA links companies, communities, colleges, associations, organizations, and individuals for the financial support of students and their educational achievement.
In announcing Castruita's election, Dr. Nelsen praised his commitment toward helping all students achieve the dream of postsecondary education. "His is the kind of commitment this nation needs as we strive to provide opportunities for postsecondary educational access to all students, and we are pleased that he has expanded his role in making this dream possible by serving on our board."
"Almost half of California's students come from low income families," said Dr. Castruita. "In order to attend college, these students often require financial assistance. That's why CSFA's work is so important. San Diego County's eight CSFA Chapters have raised $1.2 million to help local students. I am proud to assist these chapters, and similar chapters across the nation, make college a real possibility for all qualified students."
