Binational Education and Culture Committee Established

Over 50 representatives working in the cultural and educational arenas from both San Diego and Tijuana met for the first time last week to lay the groundwork for a Binational Committee for Education and Culture (COBEC).

The main goals of the new committee will be to support proposed binational projects that promote cooperation and collaboration in education and the arts. COBEC will offer support to programs that already exist on both sides of the border such as InSite, the Mexican Art Exhibition, the Binational Program for the Children's Museum, the Del Mar Fair, Calafia Repertory Theater, and the Natural History Museum.

At the meeting held on October 28, 1998, at the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), Alfredo Alvarez, Director of Centro Cultural Tijuana, and Alan Bersin, Superintendent of San Diego City Schools, were designated as Co-Chairs of the new committee.

Formation of the committee was first proposed at a SANDAG binational conference held this past summer on growth challenges and opportunities in the San Diego & Tijuana region.

In early 1999, COBEC will meet to review a proposed work program and establish a budget.

The institutions that participated in the creation of COBEC are: the San Diego Unified School District; the San Diego County Office of Education; SANDAG; San Diego Dialogue; the Scripps Museum of Oceanography; the Children's Museum; the Community Colleague; San Diego State University (SDSU); Cal State San Marcos; the United States International University (USIU); the Museum of Natural History; the Center for U.S. Mexican Studies; the Center for Latin American and Iberian Studies; the Institute for Regional Studies of the Californias; Baja California Ministry of Education; the Autonomous University of Baja California; the North Border College; the National Institute of Anthropology and History; and the Iberoamericana University.
