November 6, 1998
The San Diego State University football team returns to the friendly confines of Qualcomm Stadium this Saturday, November 7 for a Western Athletic Conference contest against Fresno State. Kickoff is set for 4:05 p.m. and will be televised regionally on ABC (the game was scheduled for 6:05 p.m., but was changed when moved to ABC).
This will be the third network telecast for the Aztecs this season.
The Aztecs (4-4 overall, 4-1 WAC) had their four-game win streak snapped last week in Provo as Brigham Young pulled out a 13-0 win in rain-drenched Cougar Stadium. The Bulldogs (3-5 overall, 3-2 WAC) defeated New Mexico in Albuquerque, 28-20.
San Diego State is currently tied for first in the WAC Pacific Division with BYU at 4-1. The Aztecs are still alive in the race to play in the WAC Championship on December 5 in Las Vegas, but need to win their last three games and hope BYU stumbles in at least one of its last three games. The Aztecs will play two of their final three games in Qualcomm Stadium (vs. Fresno State, at San Jose State, vs. UTEP), while BYU has only one home game remaining in the its last three (vs. New Mexico, at UTEP, at Utah).
LAST TIME OUT
Brigham Young snapped San Diego State's four-game winning streak last time out, shutting out the Aztecs 13-0 in Provo. It was SDSU's eleventh loss in twelve tries in Cougar Stadium.
The Cougars raced to an early 7-0 lead after defensive back Brian Gray picked off Aztec quarterback Brian Russell and returned it 39-yards for the touchdown. BYU extended the lead to 10-0 on its next possession when place kicker Owen Pochman connected on a 46-yard field goal. Pochman also hit a 40-yard field goal midway through the second quarter to make the Cougar lead 13-0.
San Diego State had an opportunity late in the first half to put points on the board after special teamer Sheldon Pope forced BYU punter J.D. Hartsfield to run, resulting in a five-yard loss. The Aztecs though, came up short as the clock ran out when Russell fumbled the ball in an attempt to avoid a sack.
The rain fell steadily throughout the second half and neither team was able to put any points on the board. San Diego State had two opportunities inside the Cougar 10-yard line, but came up empty on both occasions. The 13 points BYU put up in the first half proved to be enough as it shutout the Aztecs for the first time since 1985.
The 13 points put up by BYU was their third lowest total in the series.
