"Exhilarating" Muir String Quartet

The Muir String Quartet will perform at 8 p.m. Nov. 20 in the Mandeville Auditorium at the University of California, San Diego. The Muir, a first-class ensemble will perform everything under the sun. Their last performance at UCSD's Mandeville Auditorium was in January, 1998. Since then, violinist Lin, who received her master's degree in music from Rice University, has joined the ensemble. With Lucia Lin taking seat at second, the ensemble remains, as ever, a very strong technical ensemble. Tickets are $22 general admission and $10 for students. For more information call 534-8497.

 

Triple Play

Triple Play is three brand new plays written and directed by local playwright Earl W. Hamilton, Jr. Three short plays will be performed each night. The first two plays "The Bench Warmers" and "Blacks Gotta Die" are hilarious comedies. "Franklin's Window" is a fantastic One-man play and is a combination of drama and comedy.

These plays are for the most part, family oriented, with small bits of mild profanity, but nothing too offensive. Running Nov. 19th - Dec. 12th, at Community Actors Theatre 2957 54th St. Tickets are $10 general admission. For more information, call 264-3391.

 

Patti Page

Grammy Award winning female recording artist Patti Page delighted San Diegans last year with her timeless music in a sold-out show at the East County Performing Arts Center in El Cajon, She will return this fall to perform on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m.

Patti page is truly a living legend. She has charted 84 singles on Billboard's Top 40 chart over five decades. Page has sold more than 100 million recordings worldwide. She has six platinum singles. Tickets for her performance range from $26 - $46. For more information, call 440-2277.

 

Artist/Craftsman

Jewelry making will be the center of interest at Mingei International Museum Nov. 20-21 when acclaimed Navajo-Hopi jeweler Jesse Lee Monongye is on hand to demonstrate his art. He will present an illustrated lecture on Friday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. Lecture admission is $9.00. The Saturday and Sunday demonstrations will take place between 11:00 and 4:00 and are included in Museum admission. For more information, call 239-0003.

 

`Beethoven'

Do you ever wonder what makes Beethoven's symphonies masterpieces? Why does his music reach across time and cultures to make him the single most beloved composer in the world? These questions and more will be examined during the premiere of the San Diego Symphony's innovative Light Bulb Series on Nov. 20.

This concert, titled "The Immortal Beloved," The San Diego Symphony will explore Beethoven's most famous pieces and discover the secret to his genius and creativity. Musical highlights will include excerpts from Beethoven's most passionate symphonies, chamber music and solo piano works, including String Quartet No. 16; Wellington's Victory; Leonore Overture Nos. 1, 2 and 3; Overture to Fidelito; among others. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in the Copley Symphony Hall, 750 B Street, in downtown. Ticket prices range from $10 - $45. For more information, call 235-0804.

 

"Californian"

The `Californian' used as the slave ship in Steven Spielberg's movie "Amistad," is a 145-foot topsail vessel. This tall ship is a wooden replica of the "Lawrence," which was one of the fastest of the cutter class and sailed along the California coast during the gold rush period. This replica of an 1850s revenue cutter will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 20. The "Californian" is used as an educational sailing vessel for high school and college youth from throughout the state. A five-day sea cadet sail with students from around the county was scheduled from Nov. 15-19. Mother Goose Parade 5K Run/Walk

The first annual Mother Goose Parade 5K Run/Walk is being held in conjunction with the 53rd annual Mother Goose Parade. The parade will feature Grand Marshalls Stan Miller and Laura Buxton of KUSI Television and more than 200 floats, drill teams, marching bands, clowns and mounted equestrian teams. A parade carnival will also be held at Ballantyne Avenue and Park Avenue in El Cajon, featuring 20 rides. The carnival will be open on Thursday, Nov, 18 and will stay open daily until Sunday, Nov. 21. The 5K race will start at 10 a.m. Race registration $18-$24 adults; $12-$20 18 and under by calling (760) 634-8419.

 

Peter and the Wolf

Presented by Classics for Kids and City Ballet in a special family concert on Sunday, Nov. 21 scheduled at 2 p.m. at the Copley Symphony Hall, audiences of all ages will enjoy the adventure of Peter and his friends in a forest filled with wolves. Since both City Ballet and Classics for Kids are noted for their high quality productions and educational programs this is a concert not to be missed. Festival of Lights

International holiday traditions and dances from around the world will herald the season when Old Town's Bazaar del Mundo presents the fourth annual Festival of Lights celebration, 5-6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 26. The FREE public event, will be held in the Bazaar del Mundo's garden courtyard and will feature shimmering performances that combine candles, lights, dance and song. The show culminates with the dramatic "unveiling" of the Bazaar's holiday light decorations and elaborate hand-carved Nativity, which will remain on display through New Year's Day. Entertainment will include something for everyone's taste to enjoy. The Bazaar del Mundo is located at 2754 Calhoun St., in the heart of Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. Chicana/Chicano Art Exhibition

The inaugural International Chicana/Chicano Art Exhibition now featuring at the Port of San Diego's B Street Cruise Ship Terminal in the North Embarcadero has been extended through Thanksgiving Day holiday weekend to Sunday, Nov. 28. Works are available for viewing and for sale, with pieces by major Chicano artists such as Manuel Hernández-Trujillo, Malaquías Montoya, José Montoya, Esteban Villa, Gloria and Salvador Torres, and others. The art exhibition will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Admission fee is $8 for adults, $5 for seniors, $5 for students and $4 for children.

 

"Angels Among Us"

The Coronado Playhouse announces "Angels Among Us," a new Christmas musical by Leigh Scarritt, to run from Nov. 25 through Dec. 19. Ticket prices are Thursday & Sunday $12; Friday and Saturday $15. Friday dinners are $15 over ticket prices. Brunch by the Bay will be on Nov. 28 for an additional $12. For reservations or more information, call 435-4856.
