CPUC Vision 2000 Plan

The California Public Utilities Commission began implementation of their Vision 2000, a plan to ensure the Commission anticipates and keeps pace with the changes occurring in the utility industries regulates.

As part of the Vision 2000 plan, CPUC Commissioners will be hold open office hours on November 24, 1999, 9 am - 12 noon at the State Office Building, 1350 Front Street, Room 4006, San Diego, to receive public input.

Since 1996, the CPUC Commissioners have met face to face with Californians to discuss a wide variety of issues ranging from the restructuring of the electric industry and the deregulation of the telecommunications industry to the teleconnect fund for schools and libraries and the role of the CPUC in this era of deregulation.

YMCA, Border Patrol and Universal Care Conduct Holiday Toy Drive

November 29 through December 13, the YMCA together with the U.S. Border Patrol, Universal Care and other friends in the community will conduct a Holiday Toy Drive to benefit many of the needy children at the Copley Family YMCA (serving Mid-city San Diego), Jackie Robinson Family YMCA (serving southeast San Diego), and Border View YMCA (serving south San Diego). In addition other deserving YMCA youth and families throughout the county will benefit.

If you are interested in supporting the toy drive, please donate your unwrapped toy(s) for boys and girls ages 5 and up to any YMCA location. For more information call the YMCA at (858) 292-4034.

 

Teddy Bears Needed

A cuddly teddy bear is designed to warm a child's heart. Again this holiday season, the Grossmont-Cuyamaca College District's Public Safety Department is spearheading their "Stuffed Bear Drive." Hundreds of new stuffed animals will be collected and donated to Toys for East County Kids," a program sponsored by the East County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

New, unused teddy bears of any type will be accepted. Teddy bears may be dropped off anytime through December 20 at the Public Safety Dept., located in Lot 5 at Grossmont College, 8800 Grossmont College Drive in El Cajon or at the police information booth at Cuyamaca College, 900 Rancho San Diego Parkway in Rancho San Diego.

 

Free Flu Shots for Veterans

Veterans are invited to cancel the flu season this year by getting a free flu shot at your local VA clinic. The Veterans Affairs Healthcare System is offering free flu shots to all veterans at the medical center in La Jolla, and at the VA clinics at Mission Valley, Chula Vista, and Vista through December 17. To check flu shot days and times at the VA clinic closest to you call 858-642-6347.

 

Visual Arts Competition Accepting Applications

Coronado School of the Arts Foundation is sponsoring the Young Artist Showcase, a visual arts competition for students of art and photography. Students ages 13 to 18 may submit their work to be judged by a jury of art professionals. Students from throughout San Diego County are invited to participate in this event. The winner will receive a one-person art show and other prizes.

The deadline for applying to the visual arts competition is January 8. All art must be original and no slides will be accepted. For more information call Connie Goldin at 223-2014.

 

San Diego Computer Using Educators to Present the Sixteenth Annual "Technology Fair"

On Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, San Diego Computer Using Educators (SDCUE) will present the Sixteenth Annual "Technology Fair" for San Diego County educators, administrators and members of the community.

This year's fair will be held at Madison Senior High School located at 4833 Doliva Drive near Clairmont Mesa and the 805 Freeway. The fair will be feature demonstrations, displays, and discussions of the best educational software, hardware, and support materials currently available for education. We expect attendance of approximately 700 educators. This year, the keynote speaker sponsored by Gateway Computers is "NASA" Mike Combriate from the Goddard Space Center. Scientist Combriate will feature a presentation on "You Be The Scientist: Exploring Project COOLSpace."

Other sessions will include the Internet, using Inspiration, Hyperstudio, Claris-Works, Microsoft Office, and other educational software titles! Over 30 vendors will exhibiting all day in the cafeteria. Sessions are scheduled from 8:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m. On-Site registration is available for $20.00. Continental breakfast is included with the cost of registration and lunch is available for $5.00 per person. Drawings are held throughout the day for over $5,000 in products. A grand prize drawing will be held at 3:05 p.m.

 

New Non-Credit Courses Aimed at Older Adults Begin This Month

Southwestern College is offering free non-credit courses aimed at meeting the needs and interests of older adults. Two courses this semester include "Aging and Spirituality," offered Monday and Wednesday, 1-4 p.m., beginning Nov. 29 and ending Dec. 15; and "Retirement Living," offered Monday and Wednesday, 6-9 p.m., beginning Nov. 15 and ending Dec. 22.

Anyone can take these courses which are developed especially for non-traditional students. Community education classes meet for 54 hours during the semester and are geared towards students seeking specific information areas such as Home Economics, Parenting, Health and Safety, English as a Second Language, Basic Skills in reading, writing and mathematics and various topics of interest to older adults. "Students" of all ages are encouraged to attend.

"People who don' want to go for the entire semester can get in and get out," says Bill Sears, community education specialist. "The only cost to students depends on the individual course and the materials they take away from the class. And most of those are handouts supplied by the instructor - which are free to the students," says Sears.

Ballpark Status Report - Community Meeting Scheduled in East Village

The Centre City Development Corporation (CCDC), in conjunction with the East Village Association, will be hosting a community meeting to provide a status report on the Ballpark District Redevelopment Project. The meeting will take place Monday, November 22, 1999 from 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Fritz Ahern's Warehouse (338 7th Avenue, adjacent to the Clar-ion Hotel).
