Phantom Voices
The cast of the national touring company of Andrew Lloyd Webber's international smash hit The Phantom of the Opera will appear on Phantom Voices, a special one-night-only benefit performance for Creative Response of the Arts. This unique musical event will be held Monday, November 15, at the First Unitarian Church, located at 4190 Front Street in Mission Hills. The evening begins with a pre-show reception and silent auction at 6:00 p.m., followed by a special concert performance at 7:30 p.m. Minimum suggested of $20 per person. "Off the Tourist Track in Vietnam"
On Monday, November 15, at noon, free for Museum members, $5 for non-members, Anne Chew will discuss traveling from Vietnam's Ho Chin Minh city to Hanoi by way of the hills. This unique route takes the traveler to locations in Southern, Central and Northern Vietnam where 50 different hill tribes live. "The Myth of Conquest - An Imaginary Encounter"
Ongoing through November 15, San Diego artist, Teresa Mill, is showing works which address differing views of the 1492 arrival of foreigners on this continent. The show features paintings, drawings and installation art which approach the subject of "the Conquest" from underwater, through the eyes of mermaids who see ships passing and intuit events on land and water. The show is held at the Casa de la Cultura de Tijuana, Avenida Paris and Arturo Pompa Ibarra #5, Colonia Altamira in Tijuana. Phone from U.S. 011526-637-3122. Exhibit is on third floor. "Revolución"
Revolución, an exhibition of photographs of women maquiladora sweatshop workers by labor activist and UCSD professor Fred Lonadier along with classic photographs of the Mexican Revolution of 1910 by legendary Mexican photographer Austin Casasola will be shown at the Centro Cultural de la Raza in Balboa Park from November 12 through November 21.
The exhibition also includes historic photographs of the Mexican Revolution 1905-1923 by Casasola which document the first great social revolution of the twentieth century. The pictures are part of the Centro Cultural de la Raza's permanent collection. The Centro Gallery is located on Park Blvd., and Inspiration Point Way in the Pepper Grove area of Balboa Park., and is open Thursdays through Sundays from 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. For more information call 235-6135.
World's Oldest Ship
The venerable Star of India, San Diego's great waterfront icon, a National Historic Landmark, and the oldest active ship in the world, will celebrate her 136th birthday Saturday, November 13, from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Festivities will include musical sea chanteys by The Jackstraws, sail handling demonstrations (visitors actually set the great sails), scrimshaw carving, and knot tying demonstrations. Door prizes will be given out and refreshments will be served. Anyone wearing period British clothing will be admitted free. For more information call 234-9153.
Tribute to Daniel Jackson
On Sunday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. Sushi Performance and Visual Art and Webster's Last Word Records will present this season's second Scientists Of Sound event: An all-star tribute to the man and music of San Diego jazz treasure Daniel Jackson.
Known for his superb tone and inventiveness as a compose and arranger, Jackson created a body of work that is uniquely beautiful. Jackson's use of time and space allow his music to attract and affect a deeply diverse audience. In addition to his impressive resume as a jazz musician, he has been an outstanding mentor, teacher, and friend to musicians of all ages. "Jazz Genius of the 20th Century"
This is the centennial year of Ellington's birth, and the musical calendar has been filled with salutes coast-to-coast. Who better to pay musical homage to Duke Elling-ton than one of the most venerable jazz orchestras in the country? That's the idea when the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band returns to Escondido with "Jazz Genius of the 20th Century: Ellington and Armstrong" on Wed. The Colored Museum
The Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of California, San Diego is pleased to present The Colored Museum, directed by George C. Wolfe, opening Nov. 17 through Nov. 21. Performances begin at 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and at 7 p.m. on Sunday. From a perky stewardess giving "fasten your shackle" directions on a slave ship to a modern black couple abandoning the complexities of the real world to live inside Ebony magazine, Wolfe paints a multi-faceted portrait of the African-American experience. His take-no-prisoners style of satire highlights his characters' search for cultural and individual identity. The Dining Room
The Coronado High School Theatre Arts Department presents the Dining Room, November 18 and 19 at 7 p.m. The theatre is located at 650 "D" Avenue, Coronado. Tickets are $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for children, senior citizens, and students with ASB cards.
Olympic Glory
Opening in the Space Theater at the Reuben H. "Desert and Sea: Visions of Baja California"
Opening November 19 and continuing through January 9, 2000, "Desert and Sea: Visions of Baja California" includes over eighty photographs from six photographers, three from Mexico and three from the United States. This binational exhibit, created by the Museum's staff, focuses on Greater Baja California, including Baja California and Southern California, and emphasizes the forces that have shaped this region. It tells a story about the forces of change and relationships among geology, climate and the diversity of living things, including people.
Photographic images of landscapes, wildlife, underwater habitats, cultural artifacts and geologic forms from Baja California and Southern California are featured in the newest exhibit at the San Diego Natural History Museum in Balboa Park. EqWest Debuts at Del Mar Fairgrounds
EqWest, a regional equine exposition
covering the Western States, will ride into the Del Mar Fairgrounds
on Nov. 19, for a thee-day-show, attracting breeders, trainers,
riders and horse enthusiasts from across the Western United States.
EqWest will feature educational presentations, lectures and demonstrations
on topics ranging from riding and showing to training and caring
for your horse. Additionally, guests will have an opportunity
to shop among an acre of products including tack, art, trailers,
feed & supplements, fashion, stable equipment, grooming products
and more.
On Friday and Saturday nights, all eyes will be on the Mane Event West. This theatrical show, puts the horses on center stage. Scheduled performances include "Cowboy Dressage" of Eitan Beth-Halachmy, an Israeli shepherd who learned classical riding methods, spectacular dressage freestyle with U.S. Equestrian Team rider Charlotte Bredahl, the Hungarian trick riding.
