With the help of Southwestern College and the College For Kids program, students entering grades five through nine have the opportunity to take a sneak peek at college life this summer by attending college courses taught by professors.
For more than 20 years, the Southwestern College Customized Training Department has offered the College For Kids experience. For 1999, first session will begin June 21 and run through July 9. The second session will start July 12 and conclude July 22. Students participating in the first session are enrolled in two workshops during the three weeks. The second session consists of two weeks of instruction.
Students enrolled in the program may participate in a variety of courses including Babysitting Training; Biology-Experiencing the World; Firefighting and First Aide; IBM-Imagine All You Can do; Kids in Video; Spanish; and Volleyball. The cost for the first session is $130 and $80 for the second session. If more than one child in the immediate family enrolls in the first session, a discount of $10 per child is applied. A $5 discount per child is applied if more than one child from immediate family is enrolled in the second session.
In addition to being enrolled in grades five through nine, students must meet one of the following requirements: been identified as gifted or talented; achieve at or above the eighth stanine (90th percentile) in total reading or total math scores on a standardized test; or have a B average or higher in academic courses work and acceptable citizenship grades.
