Steffi Graf Enters the 1999 TIG Tennis Classic

Jane Stratton and Raquel Giscafré of the TIG Tennis Classic Presented by Acura announced that Steffi Graf, one of the most exciting and popular tennis stars on the WTA TOUR, has joined the list of top players scheduled to compete at the upcoming TIG Tennis Classic, to be held July 31-August 8 at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad. Others who have entered the TIG Tennis Classic to date include the tour's two top-ranked players. Martine Hingis and Lindsay Davenport, as well as the red-hot Venus Williams who just won her third and fourth titles of 1999 in Hamburg and at the Italian Open in Rome.

San Diego tennis fans are very familiar with Graf's competitive style and winning spirit. In fact, she will be in pursuit of an unprecedented fifth championship this year, having won the event in 1989, `90, `93 and `94.

Steffi Graf returned to professional women's tennis last year after an eight-month layoff due to knee surgery. By the end of the year she was one of the most consistent players on the WTA TOUR and vaulted from off the rankings list back into the top ten. Graf is currently ranked #6 on the WTA TOUR. She won three major tournaments in 1998, bringing her total career wins to 106, including 21 Grand Slams. Yesterday she reached a major career milestone in Berlin playing her 1,000th professional match. She holds the record in both women's and men's professional tennis for the most weeks at the #1 ranking. She also holds the women's record for career earnings, recently surpassing tennis legend Martine Navratilova.
