Seven Schools in San Diego to Host 1999 Camp Invention, A National Science and Creativity Camp

San Diego area schools will host seven sites for Camp Invention, a national non-profit summer day camp sponsored by the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Camp will be held in June, July and August for children entering second through sixth grade.

Camp Invention is designed to promote creative learning by providing children with hands-on, interactive activities that encourage creative solutions. Children participate in five inventive modules each day, which include disassembling old machinery and using the parts to make their own invention.

Two different curriculums will be offered. Both Camp A and Camp B emphasize campers designing and building their own inventions. In addition to inventing. Camp A includes crash landing on an imaginary planet and figuring out how to get back to earth, creating an amusement park ride, and searching for hidden treasures. Camp A will be held in these locations:

June 21 - 25 - Montgomery Middle School, El Cajon

July 19-23 — Otis Elementary School, National City

July 12-16 — Aviara Oaks Elementary School, Carlsbad

July 26-30 — Kumeyaay Elementary School, Tierra-santa, San Diego

At Camp B, in addition to inventing, campers will explore the game of marbles and create their own marble-ous machines, design and make their own Probability Carnival with games and prizes and construct 3-D Antenna Tower structures for earthlings and distant extraterrestrials. Camp B will be held at these locations:

July 26-30 — Rancho San Diego Elementary, El Cajon

August 2-6 — Chaparral Elementary School, Poway

August 9-13 — Torrey Pines Elementary School, La Jolla

San Diego Regional Coordinator Cathlen Chu said, "We are pleased to bring a camp of this caliber and established reputation to San Diego for our second year. Camp Invention lets science come alive for campers and gets kids to think out-of-the-box. It is challenging and fun-filled program for children of all academic abilities.
