San Diego MANA will award over $17,000 in scholarships this year to 19 Latinas who are pursuing a college education. The 1999 Sylvia Chavez Memorial Scholarship recipients are each attending a community college, undergraduate or graduate course of study.
MANA is a national organization dedicated to the advancement of Latina women of all ages and promotes the equal participation of Latinas in social, educational, economic, and political processes.
A private celebration and recognition event in honor of the 19 scholarships winners will be held the afternoon of Sunday May 23 at Sherman Heights Community Center (2258 Island Avenue, San Diego).
Norma Gonzalez-Jasso, scholarship chair states: "the money for scholarships is made possible through the generosity of business sponsors and the love, labor and commitment of MANA members. Each year, our members spend an enormous amount of their time and energy to raise the necessary funds for scholarships."
San Diego MANA's next scholarship fundraiser will be held the evening of Saturday, June 26, 1999 at UCSD Price Center. For more information on this event, contact Lourdes Felix at (619) 550-9091.
San Diego MANA has over 200 members and established its scholarship program eight years ago as a way of helping Latina women achieve their educational goals. The scholarship honors Sylvia Chavez, a MANA member and community leader, who was committed to the organization's vision and goals. More than 70 Latina women have received financial assistance toward their education since 1991, when the first scholarships were awarded.
San Diego MANA also sponsors the Hermanitas Program for young Latina women. This one-on-one mentoring program provides educational workshops, career exploration and academic tutoring by MANA members.
