Chili Teams Cook for Charity

Imperial Beach -- Chili and charity prove to be an excellent combination on May 22 as teams compete at the 6th annual Imperial Beach Chili and Jazz Festival.

The teams will compete for award cash prizes of $500 for first place, $250 for second place and $100 for third place. Cookoff entrants are divided into amateur and restaurant categories. the amateurs make three gallons of chili on-site and the restaurants make six gallons. Port to Hold Public Workshops/Meetings

The Port of San Diego will hold several public workshops and community meetings in reference to the use of Harbor Island and the Maritime Master Plan.

The first of the meetings will be a workshop to solicit input for preparation of a master plan for the Harbor Island area. The first workshop will take place on Wednesday, May 19 from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Westin Harbor Island Hotel, Catalina Room, 1590 Harbor Island Drive. Free parking and refreshments will be provided.

The meeting will include an overview of the master planning process, goals and objectives, issues, opportunity areas and discussion of potential development options.

The Port will also host a series of community outreach meetings to seek public input for a Maritime Master Planning effort now underway. The goal is to improve all facets of marine operations, from the Cruise Ship Terminal at the North Embarcadero to cargo facilities at the Tenth Avenue and National City Marine Terminals. Meetings will be held as follows:

• May 17, 6-8 pm, International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU) Hall, 980 Gulf Street, San Diego

• May 20, 6-8 pm, ILWU Hall, 980 Gulf Street, San Diego

• May 26, 6-8 pm, Port Planning Center, 585 N. Harbor Lane, San Diego.

 

Public Meeting for Social Promotion/Retention in City Schools

A special public meeting to discuss "Social Promotion & Retention" to cover proposed policy, discuss parent roles and responsibilities and solicit parent input, Thursday, May 20, 6:30-8 pm at Kearny High School Auditorium, 7651 Wellington Way, Linda Vista.

The California legislature passed AB 1626 requiring local school boards to approve a policy on promotion and retention of students in order to receive appropriate funding for support and intervention programs for at-risk students. The May 20 public meetings is being held to orient parents on AB 1626 and the San Diego City Schools' efforts to establish a policy.

Another meeting hosted by San Diego City Schools will be a symposium to preview `Schools for Next Generation', how schools will be designed and built to serve the needs of the next generation will be discussed May 15. The half-day symposium will be held at Cesar Chavez Elementary School from 8 am to noon. Chavez Elementary is located at 1404 40th St.

 

Teens Rally for a Healthy Future

Teens and adults will converge at the Parkway Plaza Mall in El Cajon, Saturday, May 15 from 11 am to 4 pm for "Teens Rally for a Healthy Future." Up to 30 community groups will reach out to teens with information about programs and services that promote responsible decision-making. In addition, health officials from Baja California, Mexico will be in attendance to provide information about teen pregnancy prevention programs in their communities.

 

Free Immunizations for Children

All children, especially those under two years of age can receive free vaccines on Saturday, May 15. These shots can protect your child from diseases such as Diptheria, Measles, Hepatitis-B, Rubella, Polio, and Whooping Cough.

The free immunizations will be give from 8:30 am till noon at the Kaiser Per-manente Medical offices, 3955 Bonita Road in Bonita. It's all free and open to the public.
