A free summer day camp for boys and girls, ages 10-16, will be held at San Diego City College, June 14-July 19, from 12:45-5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The campus is located in downtown San Diego at 1313 12th Avenue.
The federally-funded program, National Youth Sports Camp, targets inner city youth from economically disadvantaged areas who would otherwise be unable to experience summer camp involvement.
Activities will include free lunch and snacks, sports instruction, daily physical exercise, talent shows, field trips to areas of interest in San Diego and seminars in subjects such as alcohol/drug prevention, nutrition, computer training, career planning, and social skills enrichment. Sports will include volleyball, basketball, softball, swimming, tennis, soccer and football.
City College has cosponsored the NYSP camp for the past 12 years and is one of the 170 sites across the nation hosting these camps.
Requires physical examinations will be given free of charge on June 5, 9 a.m.-12 noon in the San Diego City College gym, 1450 Park Blvd., across the street from San Diego High School. Camp participants must live in the following zip codes: 92101 through 92107, 92110, 92111, 92139 and 92113 through 92116 and meet income guidelines.
