Merino Receives Alumni Scholarship at USIU
El Cajon resident Jorge Merino is a recipient of the Alumni Association
Scholarship at United States International University. An undergraduate
pursing a degree in history with a minor in teaching English to
speakers of other languages, Merino was one of two current USIU
students to receive a $1,000 scholarship from the USIU/CWU Alumni
Association at its annual dinner on Saturday.

"Former City Manager Jack McGrory's Business Outreach
Plan for PADRES and Minority Business is business as usual"
With loud fanfare Jack McGrory, now CEO of the San Diego Padres,
recently announced an outreach goal of 20 percent participation
with the Historically Underutilized Business Enterprises (HUBE)
and Emerging Business Enterprise firms (BEF), in the PADRES downtown
BallPark & Redevelopment Project. In what looked awfully similar
to the City of San Diego's failed "outreach program,"
McGrory introduced the PADRES plan to increase minority (Mexican
& Black firms) percentage of the construction contracts. What
McGrory is served up is a `curve ball' that may look good, but
that will bite you in the end.

November elections will start soon, and both political parties
will focus on several key states with important concentrations
of Hispanics. The race for President is especially close in Ohio,

In election years, California's public officials trust polls
to tell them about the concerns of California residents. Even
in this poll-heavy environment, the voices of women and girls
go largely unheard. The low volume of women's voices does not
reflect their lack of interest, but rather the societal habit
of ignoring these voices, and the lack of resources to organize
women around the public policies that shape their lives.

There are two disturbing aspects of the Stalling's IPO impropriety
not yet discussed; The first was the incredibly stupid absolution
hastily bestowed by City attorney Casey Gwinn, who opined that
there was nothing wrong with the deal because the IPO money itself
had no dealings before the city council. That's like saying that
a bribe paid with U.S. Currency is okay because the Federal Reserve
has no business pending before our local government.
