Secretary of the Army, Louis Caldera will speak at the National Press Club March 26. His topic "Do We Need a Draft?"... Challenging Americans to serve. Caldera recently sparked controversy over his statements that American youth have an obligation to serve our nation.

Hispanic students at Michigan State University recently removed 5,000 books from the school library to demand the creation of a Hispanic studies major and the hiring of more Hispanic faculty members. The students are members of MEXA (Chicano Student Movement ). The University has 35 Hispanic tenure-track professors out of 1,987 faculty members.

 

Assembly Speaker Antonio R. Villaraigosa (D-Los Angeles) appointed Christine Kehoe to the California Coastal Commission. Evidently the Speaker is having difficulty appointing Mexican American from San Diego to any position in the State government.

 

Assemblywoman Sarah Reyes honored Fowler city resident Danielle Lopez during a special ceremony in the California State Assembly as "Woman of the Year." Lopez is a deputy Commissioner for the State of Prisons and has worked over 19 years with the California Department of Corrections.

03/06 — Gov. Bush attends a fund-raiser for a four-term Republican from Pres. Clint-on's Arkansas home town.

03/07 — Bush told the Baptist Church "American culture is going downhill."

03/15 — While George Bush hides out in the State Capitol, all other Republican candidates are out slugging it out in the feedlots of Iowa and slush of New Hampshire. Where are you George?

 

500 Maya Rebels left their isolated Chiapas villages to promote the consultion throughout Mexico and the U.S. They are pressing for a change in the Mexican political system and a just peace in Chiapas through their plebiscite. Any Mexican over 12 can vote yes or no, anywhere in the world. Polling places will be placed throughout San Diego for those wishing to vote. Call 238-4708 for polling places.

 

Cincinnati Enquirer paid a $10 million fine to `Chiquita Banana Co.' Over stories filed by their reporter Michael Gallagher, who questioned their business practices. Gallagher was charged with intercepting voice mail to obtain his information. Gallagher will probably get 2½ years in prison plus a $7,500 fine. Oh, yes, he lost his job. The Cincinnati Enquirer is owned by the Gannet Co.

 

Search underway to replace former Superintendent Anthony Trujillo from the Ysleta school district where he was hired after being fired by the Sweetwater Union High School District. Finalist include Jesus Ornerio Chavez, Harlingen Consolidated School District Superintendent; Rene Javier Diaz, Phoenix, Ariz. Union High School District Superintendent; Michael Hinojosa, Superintendent Hays Consolidated School District in Austin; Esperanza Sendejas, former superintendent in Brownsville and Indianapolis; and Lee Varges Santa Fe (N.M,), Public School Superintendent. Trujillo has since applied for the job of the Dallas Independent School District but was rejected.
