North County Latino community leaders are spearheading a blood and bone marrow drive with the San Diego Blood Bank during "Latino Fiesta Days at the Flower Fields," Saturday, March 27 and Sunday, March 28, in the parking lot of the Flower Fields, corner of Palomar airport Rd. and Paseo Del Norte, Carlsbad. The drives will be held from 12 noon to 4 p.m. both days. Local patients Nitza Lipp and Jake Fitzpatrick, who are searching for marrow matches, are the focus of the event.
Mariachi Bands, The Charger Girls, Ethnic Foods and a book signing by Victor Villaseñor, author of Rain of Gold, will highlight the days' festivities. In addition, those who give blood on Sunday (March 28) at the Flower Fields will receive a Cinema-Star movie pass, a San Diego Blood Bank t-shirt, a coupon for a date shake at Hadley's and a voucher for the Carlsbad Company Stores.
Nitza Lipp is Latinoand ethnic minorities are currently under-represented on the national marrow registry. That means patients from minority communities are less likely to find matched donors because a patient's most likely match outside the immediate family is someone of the same racial or ethnic group. Latino volunteer donors are strongly urged to attend this drive.
Potential marrow donors must be 18 to 60 years old and in general good health, with no history of asthma, diabetes or heart disease.
Blood donors must be over 17 years of age, weight at least 110 pounds and be in good health. A good meal is recommended before donation.
