La Jolla Country Day School is accepting entries from high school students throughout San Diego County for the 13th annual Amy Marie Watkins Memorial Poetry Prize. The contest was established in memory of Watkins, a Country Day student who died at the age of 17 in April 1987. "The Memorial Poetry Prize recognizes talented young poets like Amy," said Bruce Boston, Watkins' English and creative writing teacher.
A $150 first prize and a $100 second prize will be awarded. The deadline for submitting entries is Friday, May 5, 2000. For further information about the competition phone Bruce Boston at (858) 453-3440 x168. Information can also be found at www.ljcds.org.
Entry rules: Students in grades nine through 12 from San Diego schools are eligible for the competition. No more than two poems per student may be entered, and each entry must be submitted on a separate sheet of paper. All entries must be typed, and manuscripts will not be returned. Entries must include the following information: the author's name, home phone number, grade, school and school address, and name, address and phone number of the author's parent or guardian. All entries must be submitted by a member of the faculty or administration of the student's school, and the faculty sponsor's name should be included on each entry.
