Hands-on Lesson Brings Third Graders to Sea Breeze Homes

Otay Mesa — A class of third graders from Finney Elementary School in Chula Vista got a hands-on lesson about homebuilding when they visited a new home neighborhood within walking distance from their school. Their visit to Pardee Homes' Sea Breeze community gave the children the opportunity to learn how a new house is built, as well as tour the finished product.

Pardee’s Larry Gallant, construction superintendent, explained some of the technicalities of blueprints to Barbara Bryant’s third grade class from Finney Elementary School.

"It was a great learning experience," said Barbara Bryant, the third grade teacher from Finney Elementary who arranged the field trip. "Not only did the children learn about reading blueprints and some of the various tools used to build a home, they even got a chance to hammer some nails."

Pardee's Larry Gallant, construction superintendent, showed the class the plans for one of the models, set-up a drywall demonstration and stressed the importance of how reading and math play a big part in construction.

"The children were mesmerized by the blueprints," said Gallant. "It was a lot of fun working with these kids, who seem to be at an age when they want to learn about everything."

The children also had a chance to tour the finished model homes at Sea Breeze and see how marketing comes into play when a new home is built and ready to be sold. Part of their lesson will include going back to class and designing their own new home floor plan. When complete, the designs will be displayed in the sales office at Sea Breeze.

Sea Breeze, which is located in Pardee's master-planned community of Ocean View Hills, features three traditional-style floor plans that range in size from four to five bedrooms with up to 2,231 square feet. This popular new home neighborhood is located just off Palm Avenue and is part of a community that offers residents great pricing, styling and a convenient location. Ocean View Hills encompasses a 987-acre setting where nearly half the land will be preserved as open space.
