"The Merry Widow"
The San Diego Comic Opera opens its 21st Season March 24 with Franz Lehár's beloved The Merry Widow, the role of Hanna Glavari, the charming widow of the title, will be played by Susan Hanson, a very talented soprano who is no stranger to major performance leading roles. Ms Hanson's character is from Marsovia and a great catch for any man, not only because of her beauty and charm but also because she has inherited the fortune of a fabulously wealthy American who had conveniently died two weeks after marrying her. Opening March 24, at 8 p.m. at the Casa del Prado Theater running through April 2. Ticket prices range from $17 - $23. For tickets or other information call 239-8836.
The Magic of Mata Ortiz
A panel of noted speakers will highlight the tenth annual Latin American Symposium, "Ancient Casas Grandes: Spheres of Influence," hosted by the San Diego Museum of Man from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, March 25.
The popular annual Symposium is designed to complement the Museum's comprehensive main floor exhibit, "The Magic of Mata Ortiz," which spotlights the intricate ceramic art and artistic history of the legendary potter Juan Quezada and his family. The Big Sushi Thing
Sushi Performance and Visual Art, the foremost presenter of innovative contemporary art in San Diego, is announcing their First Annual "The Big Sushi Thing: Cultured Chaos," a Black Tie/Black Leather party. This event will host fabulous entertainment, feature some of San Diego's finer caterers and restaurants, and will conclude with a scandalous fashion show for the very bold at heart. Education in Chiapas
Escuelas para Chiapas/Schools for Chiapas will host a live music concert to promote and continue the ongoing cultural and educational project of creating the first autonomous, indigenous schools in Chiapas, Mexico. The concert will be in Downtown San Diego: Saturday, March 25 at 8 p.m. at the World Evolution Loft at 624 Broadway and 6th St. The live music will be provided by local bands which include Super Sonic Samba, Revelations, Agua Dulce, JAH Mattiks, and an L.A. band called Cawama. "A Triumph of Spirit"
Author and San Diego State University Professor Ricardo Griswold del Castillo will discuss his newest book, César Chávez: A Triumph of Spirit. A Professor of American Studies, Griswold del Castillo has published numerous books and has been involved in a myriad of projects relating to Mexican history, including a documentary on legendary Chicano activist César Chávez. His books will be available for purchase, and he will conduct a book signing following the presentation. April Fools Day
Singles looking for love are invited to find their `perfect match' on Friday, March 31 at Margarita Rocks, 959 Hornblend Street in Pacific Beach. In celebration of April Fool's Day, Perfect Match and Margarita Rocks will host "Fools for Love," an all night singles party packed with games and prizes, including passes to a preview of the upcoming Touchstone Pictures film "Keeping the Faith." Fresh Start
St. Paul Peterson, an accomplished musician and former band member for The Time, Steve Miller and Boz Scaggs, has brought together a group of rising stars from the music world to play a concert exclusively for the March 26 Celebrity Dinner for the 8th Annual Kicks on the Green Celebrity Golf Tournament, March 26 - 27 at the Morgan Run Resort and Club in Rancho Santa Fe.
More than 500 guests are expected at the event, put on every year by San Diego Charger's kicker John Carney, to raise funds for San Diego-based Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, Inc. Fresh Start provides free reconstructive surgery primarily to children who suffer from physical deformities caused by birth defects, accidents, abuse, or disease. "Artists on the Cutting Edge"
The Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego's popular literary and performing art series, Artists on the Cutting Edge, will return for its eighth season of Thursday evening performances at the Museum's Sherwood Auditorium from March 16 to April 27, at 7:30 p.m. (700 Prospect Street, La Jolla). This year's program includes many of today's most innovative artists, including Trey Ellis, Adrienne Rich, Arthur Blythe, Mona Simpson, and Luis Rodriguez, among others. Largest Orchestra to Perform
Two milestones will mark the San Diego Symphony's March 24-26 Connoisseur concerts: A performance by the season's largest orchestra and the San Diego debut of Van Cliburn award-winning pianist Jon Nakamatsu. Conducted by Jung-Ho Pak, Symphony Artistic Director, 98 musicians will perform Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 6 ("Tragic") in a concert that is expected to be the highlight of the classical music season. Friday and Saturday evening Connoisseur concerts begin at 8 p.m. The Sunday matinee begins at 2 p.m. All concerts are held at Copley Symphony Hall, 750 B Street. Ticket prices range from $15-$60.
