Chula Vista Chamber Kicks Off Spanish Language Book Drive for George Bailey Detention Center Inmates

When the International Committee of the Chula Vista Chamber of Commerce learned that Spanish-speaking inmates at the County's George Bailey Detention Center were without reading materials, they decided to take action. A drop-off site was quickly established at the Chamber, 233 4th Avenue, for "socially acceptable" Spanish-language paperback books and magazines. According to the Center, "Socially acceptable" means "not gang-related or no nudity."

Detention center counselors will provide the pick up and delivery service of the books and magazines to the inmates.

Although this is an all-male facility, counselors will be happy to pass on any reading materials not used at Center to other correctional facilities. The counselors have already indicated that the inmates are very excited about the public's interest in providing them with reading materials in Spanish.

For additional information contact the Chamber at 420-6603.
