The Eastlake High School Baseball Team accomplished the unexpected, they won the 1999 Metro Conference Baseball Title, they won the 1999 CIF Division II Baseball Championship, they broke the Team State and County Single Season Home Run record and they produced their first scholarship recipient to an NCAA Division I University.
On June 17, 1999, Tony Perez signed his National Letter of Intent to the University of San Diego (USD). Tony will take to USD his 1999 First Team All CIF award, his First Team All Metro Conference Award and his Captain of the All Academic Team award to assist Head Coach Rich Hill and the rest of the Torero Baseball Team to win a Western Coast Conference Championship.
Tony Perez was born and raised in Chula Vista and began his baseball career at Parkview Little League. He then was selected to play Varsity Baseball as a Freshman by Eastlake Head Coach David Gonzalez. "It was an honor to play for such a special coach, he not only taught me baseball, but he taught me to be a leader on the field as well as in the community" Tony stated. "Anyone could rise to the next level with coach Gonzalez leadership".
