San Ysidro Celebrates Writing!

On June 13, San Ysidro School District will honor young authors in grade K-8 by celebrating the Fifth Annual Writer's Tea, at Lowes Coronado Bay Resort in Coronado. Mr. Antonio Hernandez Madrigal will be the guest speaker.

This event is the culmination of a collective effort between teachers and district's staff. Students were selected from Beyer, La Mirada, Smythe, Sunset and Willow Elementary Schools as well as from San Ysidro Middle School. Their stories, poems and essays are compiled and published into an Anthology. Some students were chosen to read their compositions to the public. To make this celebration special and meaningful for the students, the District invited Mr. Antonio Hernandez Madrigal, the author of, "The Eagle and The Rainbow" and "Erandi's Braids" as a motivational speaker.

Antonio Hernández Madrigal grew up in the state of Michoacán, México and migrated to the United States in 1976. While learning English he worked as a harvester in the fields of Southern California and Arizona. His favorite phrase is "Dreams do come true" and his present goal is to work with migrant children and other minority groups. His first book, "The Eagle and the Rainbow" is a collection of Mexican legends illustrated by Tomie dePaola. His second book is "Erandi's Braids" illustrated as well by Tomie dePaola. His upcoming book, "Blancas Feather's," a story about the blessing of the animals is scheduled for publication in the Spring of 2000. He is currently working on a major project titled "Amigo," a novel about the Mexican immigrants in the United States.
