Summer Jazz Workshop

The 1999 "Just Jazz" Summer Workshop will be held at Mesa College during the week of July 12. The Summer Workshop, offered by the Jazz Artists Guild, is being organized under the direction of Brian Kohn, Instrumental Music Director of the Coronado School of the Arts.

The focus of the Workshop will be improvisation and "combo" playing, supported by relevant music theory, instrumental section work, and jazz history. By concentrating on the areas, the Workshop will provide an outstanding opportunity for students to acquire skills in areas not available to them in the typical school jazz band setting, while making contact with professional jazz musicians who will demonstrate and teach various classical and contemporary jazz styles.

Mesa College was selected as the Summer Workshop venue because of its central location, excellent facilities, and strong position in jazz music education under the leadership of James Romeo, Director of Jazz Studies.

A typical day's program at the Summer Workshop will consist of three segments, all focusing on one particular jazz style (Swing, Latin, Modal, etc.). The first session of the day will include music theory relevant to that style, including discussion of characteristic performances. The second segment will teach improvisation and stylistic approaches, separately for horns and rhythm sections, and leading to the third segment, which will include group instruction and practice in combo playing.

One day will be devoted to master class and to rehearsals for a performance to be held during the following week.

Serious Jazz students "from 12 to 20" will be encouraged to apply. A total of approximately 50 attendees can be accommodated. It is expected that most of the attendees will be members of Middle School, High School, or college Jazz Bands.
