New Research Helping Gulf War Veterans in San Diego

Treatments that can help reduce the symptoms of Gulf War illnesses are being tested by the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego. As part of a nationwide study, local veterans are being treated with exercise and cognitive behavioral therapy to help reduce the fatigue, muscular and joint pain, and neuro-cognitive dysfunction that many veterans of the Gulf War share.

Up to twenty percent of veterans who served in the Gulf War between August 1990 and August 1991 returned with mysterious, unexplained symptoms. Although, there is no known cause and research continues, there is reason to believe that treatment can reduce veterans' symptoms. "Exercise and cognitive behavioral therapy are effective treatments for a variety of illnesses such as chronic fatigue syndrome, fybromyalgia, and multiple chemical sensitivities," said Dr. Gregory Gray, the principal investigator of this study.,

In a related study, the Naval Health Research Center is also testing the effects on an antibiotic treatment for Gulf War illnesses.
