Third Annual Herb Festival

Come get the latest and greatest information on herbs from experts at the third annual Herb Festival held at Quail Botanical Gardens on June 19 and 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Presentations will include topics such as "Blood Type and Diet" given by Dr. Greg Kelly, N.D., which will focus on botanical strategies to compensate for blood type limitations. A wide variety of herb-related items, such as soaps, cookbooks and crafts will be available for sale as well as refreshments. Food samples, herb walks through the Gardens and tours of the entire Gardens will also be available. Admission prices are: $5 for adults; $4 for seniors; $2 for children age 5-12; children under 5 are free as are members. For more information call (760) 436-4036.

 

Clothing from the 17th to the 20th Century

The Women's History Reclamation Project is proud to showcase its newest acquisition, an antique clothing collection with select pieces dating back as far as the 17th century. From a bonnet that traveled on the Mayflower and a gold rush saloon hall dress dripping with fringe to Civil War-era gowns and a wool bathing suit from the 1920s, over 250 years of women's history will be constructed using clothing characteristic of America's most significant and memorable eras.

The clothing, donated by long-time collector Midge Neff-LeClair, will be on display from June 22 through August 31, 1999 at the Women's History Reclamation Project, located at 2323 Broadway, Suite 107 in the Golden Hill neighborhood near downtown San Diego. For more information, call 233-7963.

 

"Cinderella"

Moonlight Amphitheatre presents a youth theatre production of this American tradition on June 16 through 20, "Cinderella" With Julie Andrews in the title role, "Cinderella" had one-night run on television in 1957 and was viewed by more people than had attended all the performances of all the Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway productions put together.

Performance times are Wednesday through Sunday 1 at 8 p.m. at the Amphitheatre, located at 1200 Vale Terrace Drive in Vista. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for children. For more information, call (760) 724-2110.

 

"Oklahoma Rigs"

Lamb's Players Theatre presents "Oklahoma Rigs," a heartwarming comedy by David McFadzean, June 11 - July 25. With "Oklahoma Rigs" McFadzean serves up a very funny comedy about family, trucks and young love. McFadzean's dramatic works have received productions off Broadway in Washington's Kennedy Center and at various colleges and universities. He is currently the Executive Producer/Co-Creator of ABC's "Home Improvement." His credits include Executive Story Editor during the debut season of "Roseanne" and Executive Producer/Co-Creator of "Carol & Company." Ticket prices range from $16 to $34. "The Spanish Main"

The San Diego Maritime Museum will host a delightful pirate classic, "The Spanish Main," on the sails of the tall ship Star of India, Friday and Saturday nights, June 18-19. Films are shown on a sail screen affectionately known as the "movie screens" high aloft on the ship. Guests sit on the main and poop decks and enjoy a nautical cartoon and a nautical ambience unique to this event. Admission is $10 for adults and $8 for children (12 and under), and (seniors 60 and over). Tickets are available by calling the Maritime Museum weekdays from 8-3 at 234-9153.

 

"Loot"

Tom McGowan, returns to La Jolla Playhouse in the case of "LOOT", Joe Orton's wicked comedy. "Loot" begins performances on June 8 and runs through July 11. Loot's diabolically playful mayhem is set in an English household where a man prepares for his wife's funeral. The family's son has just robbed a bank with the aid of his pal. To escape the eyes of a prying detective the son hatches an elaborate play to hide his loot in mummy's coffin. Comic inversions soon multiply at a riotous pace, precipitated by mummy's many times-married young nurse who has romantic designs on more than one member of the household. Comedy at 4th & B

Carlos Mencia has the rare gift of insightful perception and precise delivery, and as a result, is one of the fastest rising stand-ups on the scene today. The ability to reach a diverse audience by pointing out society's hypocrisies is the ultimate goal for this observational comedian. Earlier in the year, Mencia was tapped to guest host back-to-back episodes of NBC's late-night talk show, Later, and make his first appearance on The Tonight Show, receiving a standing ovation for a flawless set. Additional tv credits include hosting HBO's series, Loco Slam, a critically-lauded performance on Comic Relief VI, repeat spots on Comedy Showcase as well as two solo HBO Comedy Half Hours.
