Experience the beauty and mystery of the natural world by becoming a San Diego Natural History Museum docent. The Museum is currently accepting applications for its 1999-2000 Docent Training Class.
San Diego Natural History Museum docents are volunteers who receive training from Museum staff and local experts on the flora, fauna and geology of San Diego County and Baja California. They develop the skills necessary to interpret this information for school, senior and community groups, and other visitors through guided tours of the Museum's permanent collections. The docents also conduct special in-museum presentations.
In addition, docents bring the natural world to groups outside the Museum through an extensive outreach program. Outreach presentations utilize mounted and live specimens, audiovisuals, and informal discussion on topics such as "Backyard Bugs," "Life in the Desert," and "Nature's Night Life."
Docent training classes begin September 15 and run every Wednesday through March 2000. The application process is open to all adults, however, class space is limited. The training is FREE though docents are required to become Museum members. It is recommended that docents commit to one day per week to training and then two years to docenting. No specific training or education is required. Bilingual applicants are welcome.
