Tomb Treasures from Ancient China

The San Diego Museum of Art, is presenting an ambitious original undertaking at the museum, 1999 summer presentation of Ringing Thunder: Tomb Treasures from Ancient China.

This exhibition will highlight an astonishing excavation, revealing the wealth, imagination, skill and technical achievements of Chinese culture in the period when the Parthenon was being built in Greece. Including more than 100 sets of 2400-year-old priceless objects, the presentation will provide our visitors with one of the first comprehensive looks at the life of a powerful aristocrat in feudal China. "Free-For-All First Sunday"

Both locations of the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego are open to the public free of charge the first Sunday of every month. Join us at Free-For-All First Sunday on June 6th when Tijuana artist Marcos Ramírez leads a sculpture workshop and discusses his exhibition Love as First Language (Amor Como Primer Idioma). Soul Beat's Samba Kids, ages 7 to 15, will entertain the crowd with their Brazilian Rhythm-based music and the "I, Us and Community" murals created by local students will be on view. MCA Downtown is located at 1001 Kettner Boulevard and is open on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

 

Prometheus Bound

The Theatre School at NCRT, under the direction of Education Director Joe Powers and in collaboration with Valley Junior High School, presents the Greek classic Prometheus Bound which will be performed on June 9, 1999.

Join Antonio "T.J." John-son and the players at Valley Junior High for a journey into ancient Greece, to a remote mountaintop, and witness the tragedy of Prometheus. In this classic tale, Prometheus steals fire from the gods to give it to mankind. As punishment by the almighty Zeus, he is bound to a cliff high in Scythia where his anguish is replayed for eternity. There will be only one performance on June 9, at 7 p.m. at the Carlsbad Community Cultural Arts Center, located at 3557 Monroe Street, Carls-bad. Tickets are $5 for adults, and $3 for children. "Ms. Frizzle Digs Diamonds"

The San Diego Natural History Museum in Balboa Park will celebrate a day of family fun and learning about diamonds and the Earth at "Ms. Frizzle Digs Diamonds" on Sunday, June 13, from 9:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Ms. Frizzle, that wacky science teacher from Scholastic's "The Magic School Bus," will have many activities for families to learn all about diamonds, from how they were made inside the Earth to their everyday uses. Face painting, crafts, educational programs, and "field trips" with Ms. Frizzle are just a few of the hands-on-activities featured on this day. "Ms. Frizzle Digs Diamonds" is free with Museum admission and space is limited. Admission is $3 for adults, $1.50 for children ages 6-17. Ives Underground

Dark Nights Productions will present Ives Underground, a comedy sampler from David Ives' All in the Timing, on the Underground Stage at the Lyceum Theatre in Horton Plaza. This hilarious evening of short plays will include Sure Thing; Words, Words, Words; and Foreplay, or the Art of the Fugue. Performances will begin at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday evenings from June 4 through June 19. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Lyceum box office at 544-1000. Ticket prices are $10.00 at the door, $8.00 in advance, and $6.00 for students, seniors of active military.

 

Young Artists Concert

Sunday, June 6, at 3:00 PM, La Jolla Symphony & Chorus Music Director Thomas Nee leads the La Jolla Symphony Orchestra in its 40th annual Young Artists Concert. First place winners from all five divisions of the LJS&C 1998/99 Young Artists Competition perform as soloists.

The concert opens with the La Jolla Symphony Orches-tra's performance of Mozart's Overture to The Magic Flute. Then, 16-year-old Cory Bonn, takes the stage to perform the first movement of Ravel's brilliant, light-hearted Piano Concerto in G Major. Bonn won this year's LJS&C Young Artists Competition's Junior Piano Division. Next, 23-year-old Senior Vocal Division winner and soprano Kate Oberjat is in the spotlight for Alban Berg's Seven Early Songs. Closing the first half of the concert, violinist Wesley Precourt, 15, performs the third movement of Camille Saint-Saens' Violin Concerto No. 3. Junior Vocal Division winner and soprano Christina Van Hook, 21, opens the second half with two Puccini Arias. The concert concludes with Yvonne Ho's masterful rendition of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Minor. The concert takes place in the University of California, San Die-go's Mandeville Auditorium. Twilight In The Park

This popular free outdoor concert series runs from June 15 to August 26, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:15 to 7:15 at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park. Concert goes can picnic on the lawn or sit in the pavilion's comfortable seating area and enjoy a wide variety of musical programs ranging from flamenco and jazz to barbershop quartet and banjo bands. Twilight in the Park performers as well as the concert organizers volunteer their time and talents to bring the concerts to the public at no cost.

 

16th Annual Indian Fair

The Southwest's most talented Native American artists, musicians, dancers, and storytellers will take center stage at the San Diego Museum of Man's 16th Annual Indian Fair, to be held Saturday and Sunday, June 12 and 13, 1999. This year's Fair will spotlight more than 100 entertainers and artists representing dozens of tribes. Hightlights will include dazzling dance numbers by the Zuni Rainbow Dancers. The fair also will feature jewelry, pottery, basketry, beadwork, clothing, quilts, textiles, sculptures, marks, fetishes and paintings and American Indian taste treats such as posole stew, frybread, piki and parched corn. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for Museum members, $3 for ages 6 - 17 and free for children under 6. For more information, please call 239-2001.

 

"Arcadia"

The North Coast Repertory Theatre proudly presents the San Diego premiere of Arcadia, opening June 12, and runs through July 18, 1999. This dazzling play moves back and forth between 1809 and the present in an elegant English estate owned by the Coverly family. It takes you brilliantly back and forth between centuries and explores the nature of truth and time, the difference between the classical and romantic temperament. El Cajon Bluegrass Jamboree

The East County Performing Arts Center in El Cajon has announced its "First Annual" El Cajon Bluegrass Jamboree, to be held on Thursday, June 17 at 7:30 p.m. The Jamboree will include an indoor concert featuring Ricky Skaggs and The Del McCoury Band, the two hottest bluegrass acts currently touring the country, with tickets priced at $19.50 to $33.50. Before the headliners perform, there will be a free outdoor concert festival on the plaza in front of the theater, performed by local bluegrass bands including High Hills. A catered barbe-que dinner will be offered at family-friendly prices during the outdoor festival. Tickets for the indoor concert may be purchased in person at the ECPAC Box Office located at 210 East Main Street in El Cajon, or by calling 440-2277.
