Washington, DC — Calling all studio and craft artists for the Millennium! The Smithsonian Craft Show, the nation's most prestigious juried exhibition and sale of contemporary Americans crafts, invites studio artists to submit entry applications for the show's millennium event. Application deadline is October 1, 1999.
A three-member jury will select 120 craftspeople to participate in the 18th annual Smithsonian Craft Show to be held at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC, and April 27-30, 2000. Five color slides featuring one-of-a-kind and limited-edition pieces in any of the following media are required for judging: basketry, ceramics, fiber decorative, furniture, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, paper, wearable art and wood.
"Every year the Smithsonian Craft Show is new, exciting and different. It all depends on the personality and judgement of the jurors," said the Chairman of the Craft Show 2000, Judy Lynn Prince. "Our three outstanding jurors will look for artists who exhibit original thinking and a unique way of designing their art." She concluded, "It's a promise that the Smithsonian Craft Show 2000 will be quality exhibition and sale starting the 21st Century."
The Smithsonian Craft Show is produced and sponsored by the Smithsonian Women's Committee, a volunteer organization working year-round to mount the annual event. Proceeds from the Craft Show benefit educational and outreach programs at the Smithsonian Institution, the largest museum and research complex in the world. More than 17,000 people attended the 1999 show, and the artists sold more than $2 million in fine crafts. Unlike most craft shows, the Smithsonian Craft Show does not take a percentage of sales.
