The South San Diego Wal-Mart store
has awarded Jessica Drury, a Mar Vista High School senior, a $1,000
Sam Walton Scholarship, to be applied toward her first year college
tuition at the University California at Berkeley. The scholarship
is awarded annually to help deserving students in each Wal-Mart
community achieve their educational goals.
"Jessica received this scholarship based on her strong academic performance and involvement in school and community activities," said John Sablan, South San Diego Wal-Mart store manager. "Jessica's has a very bright future ahead of her and Wal-Mart is proud to help such an accomplished young lady."
The 18-year-old Drury has received many sports and academic awards such as Honor Roll "Highest Grade Point Average," and three-time Most Valuable Player for the tennis team. She plans to major in molecular biology.
In addition to helping organize South San Diego's "Unity in the Community," Drury has volunteered for St. Rose of Lima Christian Church, Kid's News Day (which support's Children's Hospital), and the Boys & Girls Club. She is currently a fourth and eight grade tutor. "My involvement in high school activities and clubs has helped me overcome my shyness," said Drury. "Now I actively and comfortably participate in community programs and look forward to the opportunities at UC Berkeley."
Chula Vista High School Journalism Class Awarded Matching Grant From Chula Vista Wal-Mart
The Chula Vista High School journalism class recently awarded a $100 matching grant from the Chula Vista Wal-Mart. Students raised $90 by holding a car wash, bringing the grant total to $190.
Chula Vista High School is located at 820 Fourth Ave. The journalism class plans to use the funds to update its computer software. The class is composed of 14 students who produce eight issues of the school's newspaper annually. The new software will make the publishing process more efficient.
The Chula Vista Wal-Mart has raised over $65,000 for its local community so far this year.
