Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego has awarded a Juris Doctor degree to Old Town resident Michele Castillo. Castillo is one of 126 graduates who recently received their degrees at Thomas Jefferson School of Law's 27th annual commencement at the Organ Pavilion in San Diego's historic Balboa Park.
Castillo earned her bachelor's degrees in women's studies and history from UCLA in 1994. While at Thomas Jefferson, Castillo was named to Who's Who Among Students for 1998-99, received a Trustee's Scholarship in 1997, and was a member of the La Raza National Moot Court Team for 1998-99. She served as American Bar Association/Law Student Division Lieutenant Governor for the Women in Law section for 1998-99, as well as Student Bar Association president at Thomas Jefferson for 1998-99. Castillo was awarded the Charles T. Bumer Civil Libertarian Award, which honors the memory of local civil rights attorney Charles "Ted" Bumer by recognizing the student who best personifies the ideals to which Ted devoted his life.
Castillo is now among more than 4,000 graduates to have earned a law degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law. The school is accredited by the American Bar Association (provisional), the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State Bar of California and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
