From the `Hispanic News Update' put together by Rudy Padilla: "The state of Georgia is considering opening up a Latino Affairs Office to serve the growing Hispanic community," said Governor Roy Barnes.
A Mariachi Festival will take place in Omaha, Nebraska July 29. The Mariachi Cobre, Los Aieros, & Ballet Folklorico Dancers on tap to perform at the local Orpheum Theater!
A big FIESTA was presented on July 13, 14, & 15th in Topeka Kansas. Dee Grupo Valiente, Jennifer Y los Jets, Shelly Lares, Mingo Saldiva y Los Cuatro Espades will perform.
Florentino Comacho reactivated a LULAC Council B in Kansas City, Kansas.
Rudy Padilla reports on Raza in Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, and Missouri. There is a growing Hispano population in those States.
Latingirl... Published by Nosotras, U.C. from somewhere in Hoboken, N.J. and edited by Lu Herrera, is a slick mag selling i.e. pushing clothes, cosmetics, a lot of fluff and not much more. Most be for a child under 12 years old.
Hispanic Magazine, published by Alfredo J. Estrada, Coral Gable, Florida presented a nice article on the White Washing of Higher Education written by Connie Hopkinks. It is a nice summary of past efforts by Chicanos to create and maintain ethnic studies, Chicano studies, and/or so call multi-cultural studies. No new ground is covered but does provide a listing of some works carried out in the 60's,70's, and the impact of the Pete Wilson era and Ward Connerly and their impact on ethnic studies.
Of course if all this turns you off... try FRONTERA which is aimed at Latinosshlatinos. According to editor Yvette Doss-Alboronoz... This just married lady admits putting out this `zine' isn't easy... Her zine is high-camp makes fun of readers... and to all those who don't like her zine she says "desgracias to all of you who have had evil thoughts about us or wished us ill... You know who you are!!!" Pick it up this month, she has such articles such as Lone Wolf. Straying from the pack with Cesar Ross.
