Serena Williams will make her San Diego debut at this year's TIG Tennis Classic Presented by Acura when she joins her sister Venus Williams in the doubles competition. The TIG Tennis Classic will take place July 31-August 8 at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad.
Currently ranked #11 on the WTA TOUR, Serena has come into her own as a major force in women's tennis this year. She won her first two major titles on the tour, the Open Gaz de France in Paris and the tournament at Indian Wells. In doubles competition, the Williams sisters have also proved to be a major threat on the tour. Currently both ranked #14, they have posted four title wins, including two championships last year (Zurich and Oklahoma City) and two this year, one in Hannover as well as the pair's first Grand Slam women's doubles title at the French Open.
"Serena is undoubtedly one of the fastest rising and most exciting young stars in women's tennis," says Raquel Giscafre of Promotion Sports, Inc., organizers of the TIG Tennis Classic. "She has been at our tournament cheering on her sister Venus for the last two years, and we're thrilled that she will be joining Venus in doubles competition this year. We expect that the Williams sisters will make our doubles competition one of the hottest tickets at the tournament."
Virtually all the top names in women's tennis are scheduled to compete at this year's TIG Tennis Classic, including Lindsay Davenport, Martina Hingis, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Mary Pierce, Jennifer Capriati, Conchita Martinez, Anna Kournikova, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, Mary Joe Fernandez and Patty Schnyder.
